Re: Is spelling/grammer important?
That's English. After all, English is almost an Isolating Language (the place of the word decides its role), just like Chinese, in contrast to Inflecting Languages like German (or the most famous example, Latin). As an example:Abs. wrote: Let's eat, Grandma!
Let's eat Grandma!
(from somewhere on the interwebs)
ENGLISH:
The dog eats the fish. = The fish is eaten by the dog.
The fish eats the dog. = The dog is eaten by the fish.
GERMAN:
Der Hund frisst den Fisch. = The dog eats the fish. (normal stressing)
Den Fisch frisst der Hund. = The dog eats the fish. (it's stressed that the fish is eaten, not something else)
This, of course, makes inversions much more popular and easy to use in German than in English (making poetry easier). The only words in English that are still inflected are the pronouns (he-his-him).

I understand from the testimony of the Polish girl and Japanese boy in my school that english is a bastard of a language to learn from the outside. Is it really that bad?

Re: Is spelling/grammer important?
It isn't to us Germans. However, both English and German are Germanic languages, and are therefore very similar. Polish (Slavic) and Japanese (East-Asian) aren't, so it might be quite difficult.
But, believe me, if it were that difficult, English wouldn't have become the world language.

Re: Is spelling/grammer important?
I always thought that was a hangover of when Britain owned half the world and, for the most part, made the locals speak it rather than learn a new language. The Empire was kinda self-righteous like that.Callid wrote: But, believe me, if it were that difficult, English wouldn't have become the world language.

If it were because of that, Spanish would be the world language by now. Have you ever thought why whole South America speaks Spanish? Actually, the British brought their language only to a very small part of the world, mainly North America. In India, for example, the commons still speak mainly Hindi.mangaluva wrote:I always thought that was a hangover of when Britain owned half the world and, for the most part, made the locals speak it rather than learn a new language. I always figured it was the influence of the Conquistadors. The Spanish had an Empire too, one of the reasons that Spanish is also a global language. Re: Is spelling/grammer important?
Indeed. That's why so many people speak Spanish. Yet it isn't the world language, simply because English is easier. Actually, English is also a language that can very easily be sung - in contrast to German (of course, this are only tendencies. Of course you can sing in German easy as well, but English is still a little bit easier). On the other hand, it's colloquial touch (and it's giant differences between writing and speaking, along with its few pure vowels) makes it a language not very well fitting poetry and rhyme. In this areas, German is much more easier to use (German is among the world's best rhyming languages).mangaluva wrote:I always figured it was the influence of the Conquistadors. BTW, the language with the purest vowels is Italian, but German isn't bad, either.
