this issue should actually be brought to someone who is more familiar with the english language. I don't mind to mail my english teacher from high school or my editor and ask them what they think.

I don't understand why you're trying to make this related to English as a language, while it has nothing to do with the language itself. It's a problem of "more common names", nothing more. It's just like how many people, when they say America, they mean the USA; even though geographically, the USA is only a part of America, the continent. Following this example, the USA is your flute (ok, this just sounded weird lol), and my fipple flute is, for example, Canada. When people say the flute, they may (that is according to you, since I don't have this problem at all where I live) think about the one you play, just like how people tend to think of the US when they say/hear America. But that doesn't mean there aren't other countries in America, just like it doesn't mean there aren't other types of flute.

It has nothing to do with modernity. It's just more common. You will have a hard time to find the recorder in the orchestra, and I speculate that many music writers don't really know what to do with the Recorder. (I'm not trying to bash the Recorder btw. I actually respect people who try to play at it profecionally.)

Well, I think I did say it's because it's more common already.
And, I still think it also has to do with modernity. Maybe it's more common because it's modern?
And I wouldn't mind even if you tried to bash the fipple flute, because:
1. Your flute is actually a modern type of my the fipple flute.
2. I believe all instruments are equally amazing and each one is special, so bashing one would be a waste of time.
3. My favorite instrument isn't even the fipple flute or any other type of flute.

Now I feel like you are trying to insult my intelligence. I played on the recorder too for 5 years (as part of the elementary school classes) but I always knew I wanted to play on the Flute, and after three years of playing both instruments, I had to stop with one.

Once again, I'm not here to fight. So no, I didn't mean to insult you.
I only wanted to emphasise that the "recorder" was in the same picture as all the other flutes, which proves it's a flute too.

You're missing the point, which is the fact that your teacher automatically thought about the "recorder" when you mentionned the word "flute"; which contradicted what you said about people thinking of your type of flute more than any other type.

You're right, I am getting mad over nothing, but every kind of instrument is individual and special, and to see back then that you called a Recorder, a (by what I'm used to) "Flute" just got me mad, because it's the instrument I'm playing on.
How would an Alto Saxophone player feel if someone commented on all the saxophones to be the same, when clearly they aren't? (I have to say though that every good saxophone player I know can play on every one of them.)
Or even better example - someone would say to a cornet player that he plays good on the "trumpet" - true, the two instruments are identical, but they are not the same thing.

1. I just love how you treat me as an idiot (yet not to the point of making me mad) by giving me examples related to mixing between instruments, as if I wouldn't know the difference between them. It's not like I know nothing about Music; in fact, I've been studying Music for more than half of my life, not to forget that my dad (besides being a teacher) is a musician, and many other members of my family are musicians too. I've grown up in the "world of music", so I think I would know the difference.
2. I still don't understand why you would get mad because someone pointed out that the flute you play is just a type among many other types of flutes.

But isn't this the seed of the discussion? You used the word "flute" which misled me to think that you mean to the flute which I play on. the reason I posted in the first place, was because the context didn't match because you said Haibara's flute. If it was of no relation to Haibara or that pic, I would have never known that you mean to a recorder, and would automatically think that you mean to a flute.
Whose fault is it, then? The english language is the one which gave us seperate words, thus creating this whole confusion.
There are other types of flute, but since the language gave us a specific word for a certain type, we need to use it. Otherwise, you're just calling "America" to your "USA" as well (if you speak english, that is).

Yeah...that's exactly how I tried to treat you (Or more correctly I didn't)....too bad you didn't get the point at all and instead thought I was trying to insult you. It's a discussion - I'm not supposed to assume how much you know, and if I have something to say, I wanted to make sure that you would understand, by giving examples. Actually, exactly BECAUSE you have knowledge in music, I decided to give these examples and not explain any further.

Well, then we have something in common. I play as well more than half of my life, my mother is a musician (vocalist and a vocal teacher), my brother is a trumpet player, and my aunt and uncle are musicians too. I see in my music school many who didn't grow in the "world of music" and they have a much tougher time than moi.

No, Kor is actually right. In Germany, everyone facing the word "flute" would consider it to mean a "Blockflöte", unless he has studied English. However, this has nothing to do with the English meaning of "flute", but the fact that the recorder is the "(Block)Flöte" in German. So everyone would stumble about the fact that "Flöte" and "flute" are False Friends. You cannot call the flute "Flöte" in Germany, only "Querflöte" is right. Therefore, if a German not knowing this point would face "cross flute" and "flute", and were asked to decide whether of them meant "Querflöte", he would surely assume that "flute" would mean Flöte and "cross flute" would be the Querflöte.
Just to illustrate it, I'll post this question from the LEO dictionary forum:

Hi, ich suche nach der richtigen Übersetzung für Querflöte. Ich weiß leo sagt, German flute oder transverse flute. Hi, I'm searching for the right translation of "Querflöte". I know LEO says "German flute" or "transverse flute". I've asked an native speaker, he has never heard of both of them and said I should use "flute". But it's important for me that the people know that it is a "Querflöte". In my translation no context is given, the instrument is only listed.

Does someone know the really used words?

Thank you very much for your fast help. My friend also told me the thing with the recorder, but I were insecure because I couldn't find it here for simply "Flöte". But it's there for "Blockflöte".

Indeed, LEO suggest all "flute", "pipe" and "whistle" for Flöte, but the only valid translation for "Blockflöte" is indeed "recorder".

personally when i use google translation and i type " Flûte" in french,the only answer i have is "flute"...
then if you want the technical word,it's"Flûte à bec" in french and "recorder" in English...
i think in common language people use the word flute...recorder is to specify what type of flute it is exactly...
so maybe the two words can be used... there's no need to argue that way XD
