My expectations for Christmas eps are usually quite low (partly 'cause of the cheesiness), but this one seems pretty interesting enough :D, especially the apparent Narnia stuff XD

I keep hearing about Doctor Who and I did catch a few episodes before (I'm in Asia, but I have cable :p) during which my face looked like this --> :-0 the entire time because I was too confused/the storyline was simply bizarro (in a good way).

So can I ask the very noob question of how many seasons have there been already and where should I START?

There are two series of Doctor Who: New Series and Classical Series.
Basically the Classical series are from 1960s-1990s and the New series is from 2005-present.
Since you are new it would be best for you to go with the new series. Also even though it is a Sci-fi series the New series is more on Drama and Action as opposed to the Classical series which really is sci-fi.

Start with the new series; the first episode, "Rose", introduces Christopher Eccleston as the new Doctor and sets off the new series. There have been six seasons of the new series so far, and three Doctors.

Awesome, a Doctor Who thread. :D

Just saw the preview for the Christmas special. Can't wait! Anyways, did they already announce how many episodes they will broadcast next year?

I don't think next year's episodes have been listed yet. I'm just looking forward to Bill Bailey :D

And we're crazy about it because it's AWESOME! Also because we use capital letters.

^ I see! Thanks. By the way, I saw this video a while back on YouTube. I think this is good overview of Doctor Who for new fans, as well as for people who wants to immerse themselves in the world of Doctor Who. I'm not sure whether someone posted this video in this thread already or not, but I think it's okay to do so. :D EDIT: By the way, there are spoilers in the video below. So... beware. :0

That is a very good episode to start with, especially if you are very particular in chronology. But, in my experience of converting people into Whovians (xD), some people find it confusing and they get scared after watching it. So, I make them watch Blink first, which is quite ordinary compared to the other Doctor Who (new series) episodes, and then begin with Rose. Another reason why I show Blink first is because of the Weeping Angels.

if you wanna convince people to watch Dr Who, Blink is definitely the episode to show them, but if they're already committed to watching the show, they should start from the "beginning" with Rose.

^Oh yes, definitely. :D

Speaking of "beginning," have any of you watched episodes of the older Doctor Who seasons? Just wondering.

Blink is pretty much the very best episode of the new series, so it's definitely a good one to get people hooked, but you really do want to watch it all.

I've come across the older episodes occasionally, but I don't tend to find them quite as good. The only one I've watched all the way through was a  Tom Baker one because I love the scarf and the jelly babies :D
