Okay let's go, 1001, Crimson Demon. Masumi and Shinichi look at the large splash of red... I wonder though, is that really possible to do by throwing blood at the ceiling...
So we get a different point of view of the victim and the ceiling in the first page... As Shinichi mentions the footprints oddly enough go to the window... What a weird thing to do because if someone really was walking there, you'd definitely have to keep walking with the window closed (but I doubt it'll be possible without the window breaking under the weight of a person, so it's possible something else left footprints? But what about the blood splatter though...). On the third panel it's very visible again but I was wondering it last time too, how weird it is for all those papers to be scattered around the floor.
Okay so it's the 15th floor. And as in Red Woman case, we have a scarlet- themed case and a supernatural case on our hands. One thing though, I feel like this 15th floor thing might tie into the suicide jumper (Dekuri-kun) having jumped off the 20 meters down the terrace.

So the supernatural monster is supposed to be a tengu, the demon with a long nose. That looks pretty menacing. Oh? I didn't know that Tengu's could fly, even if in fiction they usually did actually have wings.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrZv3LlIpas
Shinichi is definitely right with the culprit wanting to imitate a Tengu, could it be that they wanted to show that they can fly and Nishiki would be the one to fall... That's the most likely motive if he caused this Dekuri-kun to do a suicide. This is the 'it's a fictional creature, it can't exist in real life... Can it?" part. It's classic but it never works.
I've been wondering this for a while, the leaves part of this case is pretty curious. It may have to do about Dekuri's hobby... Nishiki may have taken the leaf for blackmailing purposes but it's most likely something else. A message from the dead or the culprit.
So the aralia leaf contains a new cipher inside of it... I guess it could be a hint towards a serial killing case. On one hand it feels a bit weird because these guys know each others from so long ago, but on the other hand they are a bit too competitive as was shown last chapter, and that competitiveness might have crushed poor Dekuri-kun under pressure, which made him do a suicide. The Tengu-movie they said they were filming might have been the film to undo his life, which is why the culprit is creating this symbolistic case.
Ahh yes, Dekuri was the one who supposedly created the first cipher... Shinichi notices the scattered papers too... Post-it notes. Easy to paste and tear off... So the crimson shura tengu movie is to premier this weekend, maybe the killer is acting hastily. I wonder if Nishiki editing the script for the novelization has something to do with the case.

So, we have some sort of timeline for the events now. There's something weird about it however.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eguB_3apVA
They all said they'd go to Nishiki's room in 10 minutes time so they could all leave together to the bar. Agata and Ihaya arrived at the victim's door first, which was when he wasn't answering which hints that the murder must have happened prior to them going there... But we did see him alive at one point. So it was 10 minutes prior that they saw him alive too... The footprints didn't exist at that point, but it does seem a bit hard to prepare and kill a person in that short amount of time so maybe there's a trick to hiding this...
It seems that they're making a point out of Ayanokoji from Kyoto's prefecture being the inspector for the case.

Oh shit it's going down! Shinichi is transforming and leaves.. He calls her Sera but I guess she wouldn't think anything of that since he could ask Ran (in case Masumi still isn't sure about him being Conan somehow). There's something comedic about Sonoko asking "is it that bad"... So Shinichi is becoming Conan already. Very interesting. Since he says he'll head to sleep he might not continue the investigation for a while. The reason why this part is cool is that it allows the culprit to get time, and Masumi to hang around there at the crime scene.

Oh yeah there are others in the room, rofl. This is pretty serious... Transformation back to Conan-mode, and the guys are still just hanging there behind him, rofl...

LOOOOOOOOOL I thought he was making a phone call, it's Heiji time... This is great! The guys are making this intense and funny at the same time. Holy bananas! Heiji's using the voice-changer lmao.

So here we have Haibara's three great commandments.
1. Thou shall wait 8 whole hours before taking a dose.
2. Come up with a way to keep people's eyes out of you when in Conan-mode, which is where Heiji comes in...
3. Don't stand out as Shinichi.
and the 4th trivial rule but that's whatever.
Okay, so here we have different kinds of rules to follow. The 3rd one is something to be expected from Haibara, the first one is related to something about the drug but the 2nd one may be the most relevant because of one simple thing: there may be a time when Heiji can't arrive. If Conan needs an antidote before the 8-hour limit is up, the first rule might create some kind of effect and shorten his time to 0 in couple of minutes. Why is this important? Because Masumi is there. She's potentially one to take Shinichi's place.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! Heiji is officially getting in this quest to glory!
Heiji's phone beeps with a bored Conan's message and Heiji gets the cipher which leads to the next page which transitions back to the crime scene. I wonder what Heiji is going to do here?

Lol. We're getting more suspicious moments with Ayanokoji. This could turn pretty serious if he tries to find out who this boy is... The chipmunk makes me laugh from Masumi's expression and from meta standpoint, with me calling La Pompon a group of Chipmunks with their horrendous remakes of the Conan anime's old songs.
Huh. The victim has two bumps on his head... Are they supposed to be horns or was he knocked out with something... Or perhaps even by someone else.
I like the way that the inspector is kind of cursing the tomorrow because of the people with celebrity backgrounds being related to a murder... "When the dawn comes..." always works.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ty7Duz6Xo0
It's morning. Sun is rising and people are outside running and taking their dog for a walk. Conan wakes up and hits his head on the bed, lol. Heiji fell asleep in his bed with his heavy clothes on, rofl. Conan is ready to transform. I wonder if the pain is worth it every time... Doesn't seem healthy.
Rofl. These guys never left... But now I'm really curious to see what the hell happened during this gap in time? IT'S GO-TIME! An email from Keiko and Shinichi and Heiji are ready to roll (SHINICHI AND HEIJI TOGETHER???????) this is too much.
Spoiler:
Image
Okay now we get back to the case at hand. room 1504 hmm... It seems that they heard Agata screaming that he's being killed, or atleast Keiko did... I wonder why she needs Shinichi's help? Hmm...Both Shinichi and Heiji get introduced to the inspector. He noticed Heiji quite quickly. The bellboy will open the door and we get to see an image of......

Wtf? Lol? A tengu looking at Agata from the ceiling. The ceiling is partly hidden? I wonder if this is related to how the culprit used to hide the crime scene last time... The signs of smoke can still be seen going upward from the ashtray so someone must have smoked just recently... This tengu has to be some sort of mask or thing...
The ashtray got thrown at the tengu and it bursted into flames...

Okay so that Tengu trick is actually really ridicilous. It's a Kaito-Kid disappearing trick. I have couple of theories... There are definitely a bit more layers to this case than "a culprit" "a motive" "a victim" and "a trick"... Because from this chapter the motives I was thinking of earlier seem less likely...

What a damn fantastic chapter.

Do you think that perhaps there are more culprits and the second, less important one gets killed off by the other?

Keiko has the same bump on her head as the victim, although she has only one and the victim two. It is also strange that she didn't cover her head, yet yesterday she was eager to wear her hat even in her room.

The bumps are a bit weird but they could be from the screening of the kura tengu film too... One more out there theory is that she wanted to show it only later on.

Keiko and Niki are the most suspicious, in my view—either only one of them is the culprit, or, as you suggest, there are two culprits, with each having an agenda to advance.

If Niki is felled in 1,002, then Keiko is likely the mastermind, even if Niki was the one who set up the Tengu's appearance and its flashy disappearance—at this point, I'd be very surprised if Shinya or Mineto turned out to be the culprit.

I know how the tengu trick was done!
Spoiler:
It's dust. The culprit used a simple projector to make it look like the tengu was there, then used a dust bomb, ignited by the cigarettes he threw at it, to make it disappear in a fireball. Here's a video of someone explaining how to do this: https://youtu.be/0nwRxFYG17Y

Damn! What a fantastic comment that is even better than the manga story itself! Seriously! Couple things worth discussing...

1. Kotengu may conversely be depicted as more bird-like. They are sometimes called Karasu-Tengu (烏天狗 crow tengu), so surely it has wings and can fly. (Could the case be related to the BO in anyway I wonder if Tengu is related to CROW?)

2. The title for this chapter names it the "Scarlet-ceiling" could it bee an echo to chapter 898 which is named the "Scarlet Epilogue" where the name RUM was first introduced? In other words, will or will not RUM make a debut in this chapter? ;) Well, it's just my hopeful thinking anyways.

3. I think you're right about calling it a Tengu trick. The "Tengu" on the ceiling could be just a blown up balloon like stuff that would explode and poop (so it's gone and disappear) after heating it up by the ashtray... as for it bursting into flames... you can get the effect if it were a Balloon filled with HELIUM . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kV_YevDYIv0

The scarlet from the Scarlet Epilogue (緋色 Hiiro) and all other all other chapters of the Scarlet Return uses a different word for Scarlet in Japanese than the scarlet from the Scarlet Ceiling (鮮紅 Senkō).

File 1,002 spoiler pics are finally out (their tardiness is likely due to us getting File 1,001 in totality last Tuesday/Wednesday).
Spoiler:

I don't think it's a balloon. When a balloon explodes, it leaves behind the remains of the balloon, and in this chapter, it left nothing behind after it exploded.
Well, that would depend on the material used for the balloon... it is possible for it to have very little or almost no remains left if the flames are big enough.

The raw of File 1,002 is now out and has been translated by Yunnie.
Spoiler:
On Momiji and Ran...

Page 12:
Ran: Momiji-san!!
Sonoko: Do you know her?
Ran: Yes! We met when me and dad travelled to Kyoto before…

Again, movies seem to be more of a guideline than a rule (to borrow the Pirates of the Caribbean expression) when it comes to (completely new, as in Fumimaro's case, or fairly new, as in Momiji's case) new characters in this case—Fumimaro has met Shinichi/Conan, and Momiji has met Ran, but the manga how (the specific circumstances) is different from the movie how. While Fumimaro doesn't bring up the specific circumstances, it's unlikely that he and Shinichi/Conan met during a string of serial murders by someone dressed as Benkei (Movie 7)—plus, it seems he and Heiji didn't meet prior to File 1,001, whereas they did meet in Movie 7 (which came out around when File 433 came out). Ran implies that only she and Kogoro went to Kyoto at some unspecified point in time, and only they met Momiji—whereas in Movie 21, Ran, Kogoro, Kazuha, and Shinichi/Conan and the DBs all met Momiji during a Karuta tournament (specifically, during a TV taping of a match).

Also, Ran and Kogoro in M21 meet Momiji in Osaka at Nichiuri TV and not in Kyoto. And Osaka was the destination of their travel, not Kyoto.

Then there is actually some confusion regarding the location of the Achiwa complex in which the Karuta tournament takes place. Before the second bombing, Heiji exposits to Conan that since Momiji lives in Kyoto, she won't travel to the complex alone for rehearsals, but will instead first travel to the hotel where Conan & Co. are staying in Osaka to meet up with President Achiwa and Sekine and then all three of them travel to the Achiwa complex together guarded by a police convoy. Later though, when the tournament starts in the complex, there a location caption box claiming the complex is in Kyoto, which doesn't make sense with what was previously said.

In any case, if the complex isn't in Kyoto, then Ran was never in Kyoto in M21. If the complex is in Kyoto, then yes, she went to Kyoto, but she didn't meet Momiji there (neither meeting in general nor first meeting obviously).

Not to mention the uncertain look Shinichi has on his face when he first sees Momiji, implying he doesn't know her and potential Kazuha and Heiji interactions with Momiji in future. I'd certainly say this is already a contradiction to the movies, as subtle as Gosho apparantly wants to make, since with Ayanokoji, Momiji and Iori it seems like Gosho just wants to quickly gloss over their rather rushed introduction into the manga canonicity and just get on working with these characters.

Spoiler:
I'd say Heiji's and Momiji's common backstory that we were given in the movie will remain the same in the manga, but beyond that, I think there'll be more differences (in specifics) than similarities between Movie 21 and the manga.
“Life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent. We would not dare to conceive the things which are really mere commonplaces of existence. If we could fly out of that window hand in hand, hover over this great city, gently remove the roofs, and and peep in at the queer things which are going on, the strange coincidences, the plannings, the cross-purposes, the wonderful chains of events, working through generations, and leading to the most outre results, it would make all fiction with its conventionalities and foreseen conclusions most stale and unprofitable.”
