Have you guys noticed Yamato for some reason is always in the most dramatic and extreme cases. Now that I think of it some of those cases he was looked at as a suspicious culprit. This guy can't catch a break from Gosho. ;D

trying to separate out all of the known information from the case itself in the spoiler box below.
I'm going to avoid talking about Rum or the BO

(ch913-915 spoilers)
Spoiler:
Woodpecker Strategy
A woodpecker uses its beak on one side of the tree and then waits to capture the worm as it escapes from the opposite side.It was Yamamoto Kansuke who presented this strategy to Takeda Shingen. Takeda Shingen split his army in two and sent some of his men up the mountain at night to secretly attack Usegi Kenshin's army while the other half waited at the bottom of the mountain to ambush the men as they fled
. (Wikipedia says: Kōsaka Danjo Masanobu left Kaizu with 8,000 men, advancing up Saijoyama under cover of night, intending to drive Kenshin's army down to the plain where Takeda Shingen would be waiting with another 8,000 men in kakuyoku, or "crane's wing", formation. However, whether via spies in Kaizu or scouts looking down from Saijoyama, Kenshin guessed Shingen's intentions, and led his own men down to the plain. Kenshin descended from Saijoyama by its western flanks. Instead of fleeing Kosaka's dawn attack, Uesugi Kenshin's army crept down the mountain, quietly using bits of cloth to deaden the noise of the horse's hooves. With the beginning of dawn, Shingen's men found Kenshin's army ready to charge at them—as opposed to fleeing from the mountain, as expected.)

The body of Yamamoto Kansuke
During the battles of Kawanakajima, Kansuke was convinced that his strategy had failed and charged into enemy ranks, resulting in his death. Douai-bashi (bridge), is the place where Yamamoto's body was found and the place where they identified the head that matched the body. His men had recovered many very bloody heads, but only one matched the body.

"Those who desire life will die, And those who desire death will live..."
[T/N: Quote attributed to Uesugi Kenshin](copied from Fuji's post on page 1 of this thread)
(Wikiquotes says: "Engage in combat fully determined to die and you will be alive; wish to survive in the battle and you will surely meet death.")

"I am Bishamonten, the god of warfare, who will destroy the woodpecker"
(Wikipedia says: In Japan, Bishamonten (毘沙門天), or just Bishamon (毘沙門) is thought of as an armor-clad god of warfare or warriors and a punisher of evildoers – a view that is at odds with the more pacific Buddhist king. Bishamon is portrayed holding a spear in one hand and a small pagoda in the other hand, the latter symbolizing the divine treasure house, whose contents he both guards and gives away. In Japanese folklore, he is one of the Japanese Seven Gods of Fortune.)

The Shooting 9 years ago
Takeda Shibaru shoots a man that is about to run into the street and start shooting people. The criminal's parents died of an illness a "little while back". His only surviving relative is an 80 year old grandmother. The criminal who was shot was Yamato Kansuke's childhood playmate and was killed right in front of him. The flashback panel makes it look like he had light skin and light hair.

The Shooting at the Bank half a year ago
Takeda Shibaru shoots a man that tried to rob a bank and held people hostage. The criminal's parents committed suicide after hearing of their son's crime. He had no siblings.

The Woodpecker Secret Organization
When Uehara quit being a police officer and married into the Torada family, her husband told her about a secret organization within the Nagano police force. He stopped telling her about it after finding out that she used to be a police officer herself. She got the impression that it was not a very good organization.

How did the killer gather his victims to a central location?
Yamoto, Koumei, and Uehara were investigating near by and decided to stop by because Kansuke had never been to the exact spot where Takeda Shingen faced off against Usegi Kenshin (the statue/shrine). They are on their way to a meeting, but would have gotten there really early and would just have to sit around drinking coffee. However they also mention that they have had a lot of flat tires recently and have extra spares just in case something were to happen. It is possible that someone has been damaging their tires in some way.
Saegusa, Akiyama, and Kano were going to go check out a robber's hideout near by, but Saegusa wanted to stop to give respects to Takeda Shingen first. They say they were supposed to meet their squad leader Takeda Shibaru at the Hachiman Shrine, but can't find him anywhere.

The Plans to raid a wanted robber's hideout
Saegusa says that they were on the way to raid a robber's hideout, but wanted to stop and pay respects to Takeda Shingen. Kano says they are supposed to meet their squad leader Takeda Shibaru at the Hachiman Shrine. Supposedly Takeda already had the arrest warrant. Saegusa says they went and investigated the hideout anyway but someone must have squealed because the place was cleared out. Akiyama says that at that point they split up to look for Takeda because they thought that he may have known something that they didn't. Saegusa theorizes that Takeda may have gone ahead to the hideout. Yamato and Komei disagree with this theory by stating that Takeda was the kind of person who would kill a suspect if it was the only way to capture them and that he would have not gone in without careful planning.

Chief Kuroda arrives
He was in a coma for 10 years after being in a serious accident. After the bandages were removed he looked like a completely different person (his hair was black and now its white). He is still missing a few minor memories. "Chief Kuroda" then transferred to the Nagano police department from the National Police Agency. He is known to drink black tea rather than coffee. Yamato implies that he looks like the boss of some organization.
Instantly recognized the mark on Takeda Shibaru's head as a woodpecker claw mark from the description of the mark while standing back away from the head. Intially thinks that there is no way to get a dna match from the head to body, and doesn't really react when he is told that the big toe was unburnt. Had knowledge that Takeda was planning to raid a robber's hideout, but this isn't surprising because he is the chief. Tells Saegusa, Akiyama, and Kano to investigate the surrounding area to see if they can find someone who may have witness the smoke from the body (this would most likely cause them to split up). Tells Yamato, Komei, and Uehara to look into the past cases, specifically asking Mouri to go with them because he was "the first to spot the body", which is incorrect. He plays into the fear that the X mark could be a target despite identifying it as a woodpecker claw mark. When they discover the body of Kano, Kano's phone gets a message saying there are only three Woodpeckers left. Again Kuroda uses the same scare tactic that police officers are being hunted and that going from the claw mark, naturally it must be the same killer. (What if its not the same killer??) Kuroda says they need to scout out the place before forensics arrives. This would give someone the opportunity to hide evidence. Strongly pointing the finger at Yamato for everything. According to Saegusa later, Kuroda knew that Kano had remembered something and had gone home, they had also messaged Yamato so he would know as well.

Yamato Kansuke is suspicious
"Even if its a direct order from above, I'd rather die than return to his squad". Does this mean that an order from above was given for him to return to that squad and he is refusing it? Could such an order have come from someone who may be connected to the Woodpecker Organization?
Uehara says that this is Yamato's first time to visit the battlefield shrine. Yamato is the first to notice the splash and the head in the water. Koumei says that Yamato walks a path that leads to that bridge over the river when he does his exercises for his leg. He says that this time he did not go because he had something to do. Then he receives a phone call/message and leaves. Uehara reveals that one of the criminals that Takeda Shibaru killed nine years ago was actually Yamato's childhood playmate and was killed in front of him, giving Yamato a motive and also explains his reaction to not wanting to return to Takeda's squad. Despite saying that he did not go to the bridge today, Saegusa and Akiyama found someone who claims to have seen him there that morning. Yamato calls in to say that he has received ten missed phone calls from Kano and thinks that something may be wrong. Today is the anniversary of the death of Yamato's childhood playmate. This makes Kuroda suspect him and ask Koumei to keep an eye on him. They arrive at Kano's apartment and Yamato is already there and quoting the text message he received from Kano's phone. Yamato touches the rope on Kano's body with out gloves, explaining that his prints are already on the body from when taking it down. Suspicious because if he was the killer, his prints might be on the rope. Touching it now means that he could say those prints came from now rather than when Kano was killed. Koumei brings up Yamato being spotted at the bridge that morning, but he again denies it. Yamato again leaves the group and goes to do investigating on his own and is not present during Akiyama's death. According to Saegusa later, Kuroda knew that Kano had remembered something and had gone home, they had also messaged Yamato so he would know as well.

Kano's Case files
Kano supposedly keeps a copy of all of his case files that he has ever worked at home. Kano worked on both the shooting case from nine years ago and the shooting case from half a year ago. He remembered something while knocking his knuckle against his forehead and returned home to check his files. While there he discovered something that he needed to tell the others. "The file that Kano picked up is titled "Handgun Random Shooting Incident"" (copied from Spimer on page 2 of this thread). Supposedly he is strangled while typing something into his phone (Yamato's phone number?). Some time either right before or right after Kano's death ten calls were placed from his phone to Yamato's phone, followed by a text message. After the police arrive at Kano's house, his phone recieves a text saying there are only three Woodpeckers left.

Body #1: Takeda Shibaru
People who knew where he would be: Saegusa, Akiyama, Kano, Kuroda
Head removed and body burned and smashed in a few places. No way to piece the head back to the body.
Head is seen floating in the water aprox half a day after the body was burned, according to Yamoto.
Head was most likely set to release from the bridge railing on a timing mechanism, along with fake blood so it would be noticed.
Unnatural traces of blood on the forehead that reacted with luminol to form the woodpecker print.
Relatively unburnt part of the right shoe leaves an intact big toe for dna comparison with head to identify body. (Matched)
Note: Victims name Shibaru sounds similar to Shibari, to tie or to bind. Victims #2 and #3 had ropes around their necks.

Body #2: Kano Shouji
People who knew where he would be: Saegusa, Akiyama, Kuroda, Yamoto
Victim remembered something and quickly returned home. His partners relayed this information to Kuroda and Yamato
Victim is hung from the light fixture.
Cause of death is ruled as asphyxia due to strangulation of the victims neck 60 to 90 mins before body discovered.
Presence of scratch marks (Yoshikawa lines) indicate that the victim was conscious and tried to fight back.
If the killer had put the body on the chair and the chair on the desk, he would not have to be very strong/limber to hang the body.
Yamato comments that the rope on the body does not feel like ordinary rope.

Body #3: Akiyama Shinsuke
People who knew where he would be: Saegusa, Koumei, Uehara (Kuroda and Yamato not present, but could have followed)
Akiyama receives a strange text message and leaves to go change his clothes, it is assumed he went to his grandmothers house.
Saegusa then leaves, but later receives information that Akiyama went to Mt Saijo where the robber's hideout is located.
Akiyama is located near the hideout tied to a car by the neck. The car then proceeds to drive off the cliff.
While still alive he yells "Help me... cellphone... my cellphone" before the car falls off the cliff, severing his head.
It appears that his head does have a cross shape on it, but this angle of it looks weird.
Given that he did not shout the name of the killer, it is unlikely he ever saw the person, unless its in the message on his phone.
Drugging him and tying him to the car is would require little strength and making the car drive on its own would be easy.
Akiyama does not give off the appearance of someone who would go off on his own, its likely someone called him there.
Second spoiler box to separate out my own theories
Spoiler:
Murder #1
The advantages of being the reader, at Mt. Saijo we see the encounter between Takeda and his killer. Takeda begs for his life and says he is truly sorry (for an action he has done). However he also states that if the information ever gets out it would ruin the killer's life as well. The killer then quotes Usegi Kenshin and slashes half of Takeda's throat. While he is bleeding out, the killer then imprints his head with the Woodpecker claw mark. While the killer remains as a shadow person, we are allowed to see that he has a full sized sword. We know that after this the head was separated from the body and that the body was burned. The body's head is then placed in a bag attached to a railing over a river.

Supposedly it is a known fact by Koumei that Yamato frequents the bridge where the body was discovered. The path he walks during his leg exercises leads him that direction. The body being placed there could have been specifically so that he would discover it. Conan theorizes that a timing mechanism could have been used to make the head drop at a certain time. However a problem comes up. Yamato did not do his exercises that morning, he instead claims to have gone elsewhere. His showing up there later in the day was only a coincidence because Uehara suggested that they go there. This leads me to believe that the killer had to be really close by and possibly watching them from somewhere in order to know when to cause the head to fall into the river.

Where did Kuroda come from when he appears at the bridge? I assume that someone called him at the same time they called the other police officers of the Takeda squad, but he just appears behind them and is also able to answer their question at the same time. Also it feels odd to me the way he speaks to Mouri. I want clarification on this when the Souka scans hit because the tumblr scans make it sound like he says that Mouri was the first person to spot Takeda's body. If that is what he meant, it is incorrect and that should be suspicious.

Supposedly someone saw Yamato at river that morning. He claims he was elsewhere. If he really was somewhere else, then how did this information come in? Supposedly Saesuga and Akiyama were the ones investigating the area, however the one to announce this information when they return from investigating was Kuroda. This is a bit of weird information though. We don't know if Saesuga, Akiyama and Kuroda know about Yamato's walking path. Three possible options of how this information came about can occur. 1) Someone in that area knows who Yamato is and specifically says they saw him (bare in mind this person could be the killer and lying). 2) Saesuga and Akiyama already suspect Yamato and asked around to see if someone saw someone fitting his description and someone did. 3) Saesuga and Akiyama are lying about the information and no one saw Yamato at the bridge.

Murder #2
Still working on this bit, not sure where it will lead.
Why was Kano's head not removed? Why hang the body after strangling him? Surely if the killer from before could break into Kano's house undetected, he could have brought the sword. I have the strangest feeling that Kano was killed by someone else, possibly someone in the Woodpecker Organization. Someone who is trying to cover up the information from the past that Kano discovered, while the person who killed Takeda is someone who does not care if this information comes to light. The mark on Takeda's head became common knowledge to all of the police officers present when Takeda's head and body were discovered. Any one of them could have killed Kano and left the mark on the head to frame Takeda's killer for another murder. The text "I am bishamonten" that was sent from Kano's phone to Yamato might actually be what Kano found rather than a message from the killer to Yamato. If it was a message from Takeda's killer, why send a message to Kano's phone after he was found and not just another message to Yamato?
Interesting facts found on the web that may relate to this case
Spoiler:
In 1950, a GI was captured by North Koreans and shot point blank in the head and lived
The bullet is said to have bounced off the metal plate in his head that was placed there in 1947.

I hope that I can find someway to contribute to the community even if it's just random crack theories and looking things up for people who can't find the information they need.

Spoiler:
File 916 News:
- Black Demon: Kuroda knows that Conan is the brain behind Sleeping Kogoro, which has been rumored within the National Police Agency (警察庁). Conan gets paranoid..... again.
- vonikay: Spoiler File 916 Jap->Eng (From Baidu p/3513795340) Kuroda: Finding the clues to solving cases from an unexpected viewpoint, the brains backing up Sleeping Kogorou's deductions. That's what they say about you at Police HQ, Edogawa Conan-kun." Conan: *obviously thrown off guard* "Oh, really?"
ATTENTION: differently from what leaked before, Gosho's DOUBLE BREAK will be AFTER THIS FILE:
Black Demon: Also the 2-week-break seems to be AFTER this file, not after the series like what Gosho said
[In case you don't know, Gosho was hospitalized for 2 weeks in December, hence the break. (Source: https://twitter.com/mabest22)]
Spoiler:
ile 916 cover, thanks to Conan#1
Conan#1: Part of the cover page note: "Kansuke Yamato's unknown past is become clearer...!!" Bigger note: "Kansuke Yamato, could he be...!?"
No break next week. Since a (double) break is expected after the Kawanakajima case, current case will probably be 5 files long at least.

Spoilers for the Rum storyline:
Spoiler:
My gut instinct is to simply conclude "Kuroda is Rum and that's that". I mean, him even having "Kuro" in his name is beating us over the head with it enough. The guy has the kanji (黒) for "black" in his name. His name!

It is either he is Rum or this is a very deliberate and strange red herring that doesn't have much place. We already have enough good guys on Team Conan. If Kuroda is being introduced as another police character to join the likes of Yamato, Koumei, etc., this will ultimately be delaying the Rum storyline even further. For the purposes of pacing and wanting to get into the meat of this plot, I'm going to just hope beyond all hope that Kuroda is Rum and expect some deviousness sooner rather than... later.

I agree, these past cases I've been subconsciously claiming he is Rum because of all these strong hints that kuroda is up to no good, so I'm also making a conscious conclusion that he is RUM! ....now let's see if gosho can surprise me

I really hope so too. He just fits extremely well for the part. Just was rewatching episodes 176 to 178 this evening to get a glimpse of what a great villian Gin is again. For someone like Rum to be more highly ranked than him, Koruda seems like a great fit doesn't he? I'm not just saying this for wishful thinking but these images of file 916 and his facial features and movements in the chapter scares me more than the old Gin moments.

For the convenience of discussion, I will summarize some of the important points in this file until full translation comes out. I cannot provide any detailed translation of the dialogues for now. Also note that this is derived from the Chinese translation, not the Raw, so expect some minor errors.
Spoiler:
Page 1 ~ 8 (Crime scene)
  • After finding Akiyama's phone, they saw a mail sent at 5:32 PM. The content is: "I've found the first victim Takeda's phone inside a certain person's belongings. I'm now sending this mail to you from that phone. Since this person is a police officer, you need to find an excuse and come to that small hut in Saijosan [Note: the mountain's name]. I'll explain in details there. - Yamato Kansuke"
  • Kansuke seems to have turned off his phone so he's out contact.
  • Conan suggests that the mail might not have been sent by Kansuke because it wasn't his own phone, and he wouldn't be stupid enough to leave an incriminating evidence there. Kuroda counters this (after making suspicious comments as spoilered earlier) by saying that he probably didn't have enough time to get rid of it. He also shows that the victim had Kansuke's number black-listed, possibly in order to prevent him from finding the phone.
  • On the rope that was used to hang Kano, Kansuke's fingerprints were found on both the upper part AND the part surrounding the victim's neck, which Koumei said hadn't been touched by anyone until the forensics arrived. Kuroda orders Kansuke's arrest as the prime suspect for the serial murder.
  • Kuroda tells them to retreat to the police station because Kansuke wouldn't stay around the mountain area after they came. Akiyama's body was left there for the moment because it's dark and the ground's muddy after the rain.
  • Kuroda tells Saegusa to return in his car because there won't be enough room inside Koumei's due to the wheel at the backseat, while grinning suspiciously.
Page 9 ~ 14 (Inside Koumei's car)
  • Koumei reveals that there has been a similar hanging case in the past. The parents of the bank robbery suspect [mentioned in the backstory] committed suicide by hanging themselves. After Kansuke arrived at the scene, he said that they could possibly still be saved, climbed up a chair and untied the rope. However, unlike the current case, the rope was tied to the roof beam instead.
  • The rope hanging Kano was tied with two loops [see image], Kansuke held the upper loop to put the body down [see 915 images].
  • Conan asks the positions of everyone after that. [see 915 images for clearer views]
  • Conan asks if there was anything that could distract everyone's attentions, Koumei tells him about the message. [see 915]
  • There are similarities between the police officers' names and the names of the generals that died during the fourth battle of Kawanakajima: Takeda Shigeru = Takeda Nobushige; Kano Shouji = Hajikano Tadatsugu; Akyama Shinsuke (former surname Aburakawa) = Aburakawa Nobuyoshi; Saegusa Mamoru = Saegusa Morinao; Yamato Kansuke = Yamamoto Kansuke. So Saegusa Mamoru and Kansuke are most likely the remaining targets.
  • Koumei tells the story about the bank robbery: The suspect was about to surrender, however, Takeda's group acted rashly, which enraged the suspect and he began shooting. Takeda had no choice but to kill him. Yamato was mad at this and asked Takeda if he thought that it was alright for him to kill the suspect since he was a police officer.
  • Apparently the suspect's phone had been lost. Before he was killed, he was speaking with someone on the phone: "If I'm caught then you will be done too. The origin of the gun and X will be exposed..."
  • On Yui's phone, Kano was saved on Ta-gyou. This is because his original surname was Tsuchiya (土屋), but was changed after his marriage. He's currently living separately with his wife.
Page 15 ~ 16 (Police station)
  • Kansuke's still out of contact, but this time his phone is busy instead.
  • Saegusa reports that someone has spotted a person resembling Kansuke, and is going to confirm that, but doesn't have a car. Kuroda orders Koumei to lend his car to him.
  • Kansuke sends Koumei a message: "The events of the past are like a current." [This is a literal translation, it seems to be a poetry of some kind.]

Spoiler:
If he(Gosho) finds a way to say this guy is not Rum it looks exceedingly silly at this point. I mean I know he has trolled us before with the characters giving the "evil look" but Koruda is over the top. But going back to the case itself since we are getting more caught up with the identity of Rum, how exactly would this work out? I mean in terms of who the culprit is. If Koruda is Rum and is pinning the murders on Kansuke, how is it beneficial to him? Or if he is Rum and is the murderer then it would go against what the BO does. We know time and time again that when involved in murders they would at least avoid leaving a trail that may go back to them.

If the other police officer ends up being the next to be killed(his name escapes me) then will Koruda aka Rum be "caught" as the murderer? The second in command of the BO? How exactly would the culprit be caught in this case? Unless the culprit is the last police officer standing(not including Koruda and Kansuke).

Look at what happened to Pisco when he got caught on camera killing someone. I know he would be the second in command(Rum aka alleged Koruda) but I don't think he is beneath having the same fate. So who the hell is the killer then? It has to be Koruda but at the same time if he is Rum......it goes against the mode of the BO. Plus how would those actions relate to the goal of the BO. Damn!!! all these breaks between all the files is killing me with the suspense to the answer to all these questions.

Kansuke could end up being the first character since Akemi to die.

It has to be the supposedly-dead childhood friend of kansuke!! Gosho doesn't simply introduce a character connected to an important one(kansuke) only to serve as a motive for hatred. They always turn out important, whether it's a killer or what not. ......take matsuda jinpei for instance, we got a full flashback of who he was back then even though he served as motive for satou's hatred, or Date wataru, who we got a couple of flashbacks of(and even have a connection to a Bo member)... my point is, either kansuke's childhood friend will appear in a flashback or he'll serve a more important role, like the real culprit behind this case!!!

We still have to find out Koruda's role though. Is he just a psychopath and wants to see Kansuke suffer even though he has no connection to him? Unlikely as hell.

In any case we will find out January 30 :(

here is a lay out of the continuity of phone calls and text messages from this case
Note: The flip phone that Komei pulled from Kano's body is not the same as the smart phone
that we see him holding as he is about to be confronted by the person with the rope
EDIT: Another interesting fact is that Komei used to have a flip phone back in the Red Wall case
but since then has gotten a smart phone. He is the only one of the Nagano trio to upgrade.
Spoiler:
[Takeda's body is discovered]
At headquarters Yamato receives a text from unknown sender and leaves police HQ
(Yamato is shown holding a flip phone)
Supposedly either Saegusa or Akiyama sent a text to Yamato to tell him Kano had gone home
Supposedly Kano calls Yamato 10 times with no answer
Kano's exact words while typing on his phone are "I need to hurry and relay this information to everyone"
(Kano is shown holding a smart phone)
[Kano dies] - a text message from Bishamonten is sent from Kano's phone to Yamato
Yamato calls Komei because he can't get in contact with Kano
(Komei is shown holding a smart phone)

[Kano's body is discovered]
Yamato reads out the text he received from Kano's phone
(Yamato still has his flip phone)
A cell phone is found on Kano's body with a text from Takeda's phone
(Komei holds the phone up and it is a flip phone)
Back at police HQ Akiyama receives a text from an unknown number and leaves
(Akiyama is shown holding a smart phone)
Saegusa calls Komei in a panic because he thinks Akiyama is in danger
(Saegusa is shown holding a flip phone)

[Akiyama dies in front of witnesses]
Uehara uses her phone to call Akiyama's phone to find it
(Uehara is shown holding a flip phone)
Akiyama's phone is discovered (looks the same as the one he was holding earlier)
They find a text on Akiyama's phone that says it is from Yamato
Yamato's number was supposedly black listed
In the car Uehara shows Conan her phone with names in it
Komei receives an odd text that says it is from Yamato

Takeda - Unknown phone
Yamato - Flip phone
Komei - Smart phone
Uehara - Flip phone
Saegusa - Flip phone
Akiyama - Smart phone
Kano - Smart phone(alive), Flip phone (dead)
Kuroda - Unknown phone

I hope that I can find someway to contribute to the community even if it's just random crack theories and looking things up for people who can't find the information they need.
