The fire crackled merrily, feasting on the hay woman.

*hiss* *rustle* *pop* *snap*

The smoker says nothing further, but reclines against a rock as if there's no hurry. The figures around the fire shift uncomfortably.

*hiss* *rustle* *pop* *snap*

In the woods outside the circle, ears hear and eyes open.

The seconds tick on. From time to time, someone reaches behind them and touches the smoke wall that surrounds them. Little wisps of smoke cling to their fingers like spiderwebs as they pull away.

The smoker closes their eyes, for all the world as if to take a nap.

*hiss* *rustle* *snap* *pop*

Step. Step. Step. Step.

*hiss* *rustle* *snap* *pop*

Step. Step. Step. Step.

Fire-sounds and footfalls in sync, getting closer to one another.

Giogio gets fed up first.

"Are you going to tell us what that was that you did back there? We all blacked out and then there was the wall--"

Giogio's hooded neighbor moves as if to restrain her, but she shakes off the hand. "What did that smoke do to us?" she demands.

"You're free to leave the circle any time you like," the smoker replies without opening their eyes.

Giogio's neighbor, who has been watching the straw woman burn with an oddly triumphant expression, jerks his head up quickly. "Does anyone else hear that?"

Step. Step. Step. Step.

No one reacts; everyone is watching Giogio. "Yeah," she snaps, "You drug me and then tell me to walk away? What do I get if I stay?"

The smoker half-shrugs.

Step. Step. Step. Step.

"Listen," Giogio's neighbor whispers urgently. "There's something coming..."

Giogio laughs. "What a waste of time." She turns and marches through the smoke wall.

Her neighbor shrieks and grabs after her, just catching the hem of her shirt.

Giogio screams too, as the smoke envelops her entirely, weaving itself into a cocoon that bulges from the wall.

Her neighbor struggles, fruitlessly, to tug his hand out of the cocoon of smoke. "HELP ME!"

Step. Step. Step. Step.

The smoke wall bulges again, from the outside in this time. Slowly, an...animal...a creature...pushes through and reaches a terrible pickaxe-clawed paw toward Giogio's struggling neighbor.

"NO!" he screams. His hood falls off; it's shinichi'sapprentice. "I was supposed to have--to have a new--" He rolls his eyes toward the smoker. "You PROM--"

The gigantic bear tears him through the smoke wall out into the woods. The remaining figures hear screams, then...nothing.

There is more uncomfortable shifting.

The smoker opens one eye. "Let it be said, only you can prevent forest fires."
