Raiden I sat here staring at your avatar for like three minutes before my brain made sense of the image xd

END OF PREP PHASE

The fire is large and roaring, much bigger than you expected. It sends up sparks that quickly fizzle out in the cold night air.

There are already people here. Or..figures...oddly, the brightness of the fire means it's hard to make some of them out. You think there's a woman on the far side with long blonde hair, sticking out in all directions, or...it might not be hair at all, it might be straw held to her head by a wide black hat. And a there's a man, too, tossing a purple ball into the air and catching it, but...each time it passes across his face, he...changes. Some of the figures are wearing hoods in various colors, pulled out over their faces. Their heads are turned toward you.

After some time, the smoker sits down on a rock and invites you and the others to join them. You sit cautiously, poised to leap up and run if you have to.

"Well, let's get started then," the smoker says with a smile. "I know you're all probably armed. That's fine. Do what you feel is needed to protect yourself. Believe me when I say that no one from outside the circle will be able to find this place to interfere."

"That goes for your phones, too," the smoker adds. "You can call out if it will make you feel better, but you'll find that time moves...differently in the circle, and that certain of our guests have more direct ways of communicating." The straw-haired woman flicks a piece of hay into the fire.

"Join hands," the smoker commands, and one of the hands that grips yours feels unusually cold.

The smoker takes another pull and blows out, and keeps going, much more smoke than he should have been able to make in one breath. The smoke curls around you and your neighbors, hissing away when it touches the fire as if repelled. You breathe in, and...

When you come to, your throat feels dry and raspy. The smoke? You prop up on one hand and shake your head to clear it.

Your hair rustles, and there's a soft rain of hay.

You look down at yourself. You can't get a breath. Something's caught in your throat, rattling. Your shirt...this isn't your shirt. You grab at yourself with a hand that's far too rough. You stand, and it's too easy to take your own weight; you're far too light. Your breath catches again and you cough, sending pieces of hay spinning down into the fire, and agh you can taste it--

"Mind your foot," the smoker comments, and you stare--your foot is in the fire, on fire. The flame is crawling slowly up your leg. You don't feel it. You stumble backward, but you come up against the wall of smoke, keeping you in the circle. You can't go any further.

Your straw leg collapses and you fall over sideways. The flames are taking your sackcloth shirt and you think your hair has caught too. You gasp for breath, and this time the hay you cough up is smoldering.

From the ground, you stare out across the fire. Your body, sitting in your original seat, winks.

The flames hiss as they crawl across your face. You're dimly aware of someone lifting you...

The smoker wipes excess hay on their pant leg after tossing the burning scarecrow into the fire. "Excuse the interruption," they say. Their eyes move across the gathered figures, lingering on a certain person for an extra moment. "That was becoming a fire hazard."
