Every few moments, an owl's cry.
Leaves rustle and crack, as if crushed and moved aside by many feet.
Somewhere, there is a fire. You can smell its smoke. Its light does not reach you here.
You move farther down what you hope is the correct path. You have no way of being sure; nothing's been marked since the highway and your phone has enough charge for one call at most. You'd rather not waste it. There are no other paths, anyway.
You pause. The crackling of the leaves is getting louder, and not just behind you, where you've been aware of it for some time now. It sounds like there are suddenly people all around you, hidden by the trees.
You slide a hand into your pocket, not panicking yet, but ready.
*clink*
That sound doesn't belong in the woods, nor the sudden flare of light that accompanied it. In spite of yourself, you turn.
"It's a nice night," says the person behind you as they light their cigarette and slide the lighter back into their pocket. "Glad to see you've all made it."
You turn again. Twenty-one people stand on the path behind you.
The smoker inclines their head in the direction of the distant campfire and takes a pull. Cigarette smoke mixes with wood smoke.
"It's not far. I'll take you the rest of the way."
You start walking.
