What's on your mind?

I highly doubt it's genes. No one in my family besides me has anything remotely similar to an American accent (which I very likely learnt watching a whole heap of Disney/Nickelodeon/Cartoon Network/other American shows). It's where and how you grew up learning the language. From memory Manga has lived in the states which is probably where she picked up the American twang. Even though she's lived in Scotland for a while it's very hard to get rid of.

No, it's where you grow up. Ofc, if you spend some time in another place long enough, you start picking up that dialect/accent. It really depends on one's surroundings, not genes.

Ugh, I am up way too flipping early. Yet I cannot get back to sleep. ~_~*

Today's plans involve baking and frosting a cake, and hosting game this evening over breakfast-for-dinner of pancakes (with fruit and whipped cream as well as Maple Syrup for toppings), bacon, sweet potato fries, etc. Plus chocolate cake for dessert, because birthdays.

This doesn't mean I am at all truly awake right now, though..... z.z
I have finally started to actually publish my story! For the moment, expect a new chapter each month.

The Case of the Midnight Channel
"When a strange letter summons the Mouri family to Inaba, Ran is expecting a case. She's not expecting it to involve the TV, though.
If Naoto investigated everyone who came to visit Inaba, she'd have little time for real cases. When Yukiko reports that the Midnight Channel is back, however, she starts to wonder if the visitors are connected. Especially when the image clears, unveiling yet another mystery."

Short version: I'm taking various DC/MK characters to Inaba (where Persona 4 takes place) and dropping them through the TV to face their Shadows!

Scarlet Case "spoiler"
Spoiler:
If by then end of series and Gosho pairs everyone up, will Bourbon x Kir happen? 83
Also trying to write an essay, listen to DC opening, browsing the forum and watching a draw stream at the same time. Sure is hard to do.

Honestly I can say for myself it can be a combination of both.
For one, a lot of people tend to think I'm English or at least have English relatives when they see me or when they hear me speak English, which is funny because I'm mostly german and I could swear I have zero English blood in my veins. I've also had people ask me if I went to an international school since my English accent is not very Dutch.
However, when I spoke other languages during language classes in high school I've often been asked if I had relatives who have it as a first language as well. Pronunciation and accent is just something I've always been complemented for and picked up on easily. I've been told, however, that my dad's side of the family is very good at learning accents, so I definitely got this ability from my father.

Similarly surroundings also don't have to influence you. I've liked in near the Jordaan for a long time, it being a district in Amsterdam with what we call a flat accent. Teachers had it, classmates had it, but whenever I try to put up a Jordaans accent I sound incredibly silly. Same thing goes for a friend of mine with the worst Dutch accent ever. Well, I'm going a bit overboard with that, but when she speaks English she still has a pretty thick accent. The funny part is, though, that she does have relatives in England (brother of her mother married an English woman) whom she visits yearly and used to visit every vacation when she was little. Her English is grammatically correct, but she never picked up on the accent even though she used to see her family regularly.

Probably have to ask a friend that has been in many places around Europe, but I thought that many Germans could speak English fairly well. All I know for sure though, because I have family working in that area, is all pilots need to know English. That does sound kind of weird though.

I'm trying not to laugh very hard, 'cause that's how I'd imagine a French peasant from a remote location would sound if they spoke English.
Good work, Shiro! I'll admit to not listening to everything, it's just 10 in the morning, on a Saturday. I hope you'll have a good grade!
Thanks! I hope it makes up for the procrastination I did in turning this in, sigh...
That was the midterm, BTW, I need to finish the final paper by Monday.

Re: Accents
I've been told by exchange student friends that my English is very easy to understand. ^ There's a sample of it. What accent does it sound like to you? (Not counting the Middle English part - I know I sound like I've got a mouth full of marbles. I really struggle with rolled Rs. I've been training my tongue for years to try to do it.)
My DC Fanfic: Awaking and Arising - Shiromi writes her version of the end of the series. With 100% more lesbians and immortal zombie boys. And existential crises. Lots of them.
Kogorou - A character study that seeks to answer the question: Why is Kogorou the way he is?
A Kindred Spirit - Sonoko and Makoto realize that they have more in common than previously realized.
DC Fanfic Rants

Aquahorse wrote:brycec, English is unternational language! Of course you should know it! I hate when in Italy or Spain, for example when I arrive here, not so many people know English... It's sad... I can read and talk to them on their language of course... But they have to know English, if they are modern people and in EU...

Yuri, great you have such abilities! Little question - do you know russian language and can speak it?)) I could talk to you if you know a little)))

As for me, I usually learn other languages pretty fast too, but French I almost forgot((( although in school I spoke it fluently... No practice in it, that's it...
The thing though is that there are countries, such France, according to extended family that went there, will not be willing to help you if you do not know their language, though they may give you points for trying. I would probably do better visiting places like Australia, England, and New Zealand, where English is at least somewhat official, but as far as the Internet is concerned, English is definitely common.
