Visiting Tottori and the Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory - help

Post by Sunny88 »

Hey guys!

My school has just informed me of a surprise 3 week holiday (which I haven't heard anything about til now... less than a month before it starts, fuuuu) for all long term students. Because of this, I am now considering spending a week in the Tottori prefecture (Mainly the Tottori and Kurayoshi area).

My main reason for choosing this place is obviously the ever so famous Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory (the DC museum) in Aoyama-sensei's birthtown, Hokuei. But I'd like to see some other things as well while being there, such as the Sand Dunes, the various temples in the area etc.
- Does any of you guys have any experience with this prefecture? Any places you can recommend in- or near Tottori and Kurayoshi?
And if any of you have been in Hokuei and at the Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory, how was it? ;D

How could I ever say No to seeing this IRL?

Even if you haven't been there, I appreciate any ideas or attractions in the area that you can think of/find info about!

While I LOVE traditional Onsen, Sentou and Ryokan's, I'm limited to a very small handful of them due to my Tattoo. If you have found a place in the area I'm planning on staying at that allows tattoo's, do tell me! :D

Some of the older users here have visited Tottori and made some posts about it in General Discussion back in the day; you may find a little bit of info in there.

That's interesting about the tattoo limitation. If I'm reading your post correctly, they don't allow any tattoos whatsoever in most onsens? I was under the impression Japan was relaxing a bit on the tattoo stigma, so I guess it's a bit surprising to hear they're so unwelcome at onsens of all places.

Oh really? I will do another search on the forum then!

Yeah, While I've had no trouble sneaking into various sentou's and such in Tokyo and Nagoya, I have experienced the less "touristy" areas to be a little more strict on their tattoo policy. Even here in Fukuoka I have to do my fair share of research before going to an onsen town, as I have a risk of getting rejected at the door, hence loosing a lot of money and wasting a whole day trip :|
The hotel I'm planning on staying at in Tottori also has a sentou on the top floor, but people with tattoo's are not allowed to use it. (bummer)

nope, considering they associate tattoos with gangs. It's really problematic if you want a shot at going to those places :x

And I've done a give-away for the time I went to Hokuei (for the museum mainly), I can tell you to be careful with catching trains because the last one departing from Hokuei leaves quite early (and I don't think you want to be stuck there).

Oh, I've been wanting to ask, but would you mind posting some stuff to my to japan blog? Would be nice to see some other opinions on there :3
