The man was stealthy in his pursuit.

The boy didn’t seem to be paying much attention, but there was no point making his presence known. After that little girl had died, the boy had been poking around, his efforts steadily increasing in scope until, today, he had run about Beika making loud, bold accusations which, correct or not, involved nearly everyone in town and therefore would surely attract everyone’s attention, perhaps not in a good way.

So the man had tailed the boy all day, waiting patiently behind the corners of buildings as he made frequent stops for food, ducking quickly into alleyways as the boy looked behind him, waiting for either the mob or the men in black to make a move so he could intervene.

He paused as the boy stopped to rest on a park bench, panting. The man rubbed his temples. Two of his colleagues had already been killed, one poisoned and one torn apart by hysterical civilians. He intended to make sure that neither fate awaited this child—and maybe, as a bonus, to catch sight of one of the shadowmen and follow him back to his hideout.

The boy sat huddled on the park bench, sweating for more than one reason. He glanced behind him uneasily. Was it just his imagination, or was someone really following him? Sure, the tall man dressed in black might have stayed near him all day by coincidence, but…

No, it was coincidence. It had to be. Plus, he didn’t seem to be here now. No need to worry, right?

He bit his lip, then stood suddenly and walked quickly down the street. Sure enough, footsteps other than his own kept pace with him. The boy squeezed his eyes shut and ran, ducking into a nearby café.
