Bah, RanXKazuha isn't crack, it's 100% encouraged-by-repeated-canon-teasing, just go back over this thread (especially note Kazuha's, "If I were male…" speech and Conan's expression during some of the glomps). HeijiXConan is also encouraged by canon teases. Just look at how eager Heiji is to see Kudo again in their usually long distance relationship… I guess that's more unrequited love, though, since Conan knows how to uh... defend his honor.

I also wouldn't put KogoroXRan as pure crack, either, given the extreme lengths Kogoro goes to ensure his daughter stays unattached, and a certain moment of drunken confusion. (Given that latter panel is from the story where we learn what motivated Ran to pursue karate, one wonders if defending herself from that weren't also part of the motivation…)

Now, as far as talking as if R+K were really happening, I picture it would be more of a 'friends-with-benefits' sort of relationship, which they enjoy while S and H are off playing detective.  The boys are off doing boy things, while the girls are off doing...

Hey, I do call the posted scenes teases… There's probably no chance for any romance between Ran and Kazuha, but I'm pretty sure we aren't twisting things Aoyama didn't intend certain readers to twist… We don't really get the same kinds of scenes repeated between Ran and Sonoko.

In Japan?  Not a chance.  Even though there does exist a gay scene in some of the big cities, it's all rather downplayed and most people go about their lives pretending it doesn't exist.  The most recent subbed episode is a rather accurate portrayal of how people would act if they saw two men kissing (or two women kissing passionately).  So gay marriage is way out of the question in the current society.

Now, R+K could very easily keep it hidden for a very long time, as it's very normal for two girls who are just friends to be walking down the street hand-in-hand.  Men, on the other hand, have a much harder time keeping that kind of relationship secret.
