Gin is a talented man. He could just be pretending to be two people. When Vermouth was first introduced, he seemed very fond of her(or they were just lovin trash talking about Pisco  ;D). So he could still be the boss and is just placed himself in the field to be more aware of what his members are doing.

Another would be that Okiya is actually the boss and Conan is aware of this. Unlike his members, he was able to notice a strange coincidence from their reports to him of events and decided to investigate(because he now knows his members are idiots) the last lead. After seeing a little girl who resembles the escaped Shiho(pictures of the annual picnic), he turns on his vibe and Shio bites confirm it for him. With this, he immediately sees through Conan's ruse because it happens that the only person Shiho manually edited in the "APTX4869 death list" happened to be a famous High School Detective and this kid is doing a too good of a job on this case.

With all this settled, Okiya aka Boss, being a man of fun lets Conan knows what he just discovered. He drops the Holmes lines with Conan quickly equates to "It's finally nice to meet you Mr. Holmes, I am your Moriarty". This is why Conan knows he's not a "bad person"(aka he has principles and rules unlike some of his members) and Conan accepts his challenge by letting him stay at his house so they can play their game. Reason Conan knows that he isn't after his life or Sherry is because he could of walked away with his discovery without saying a thing and sent in Gin for clean up.

And finally, I'm not reading the manga but I did see a scan of a page where Okiya is at the mall and angry at Chianti. This makes people believe he's Akai or that Bourbon is angry Chianti but the truth is that it's just the boss showing his anger for his members because they seem to be making movements without his permission. So, once he's done with his little game, he will discipline all of them(and it's not going to be pleasant) and find out who the hell gave Bourbon permission to dress as Akai.

Yikes.  If this is how it really is, the end really is near.  What with Conan already knowing who the Boss is, and that he's living next door (next door to Agasa and Haibara, but still next door).  I can't imagine the series running much longer after that.  Sure, in this scenario Conan/Shinichi doesn't have anything that he can use as evidence against the Boss if he wants to turn him in to the cops... (testimony of an apparent 7-year old will obviously be hard to admit as evidence) but hmm...

HEY, MAYBE SCAR AKAI IS THE BOSS!  And his stupid underlings almost freaking shot him!  Although they were waiting for his permission, so it seems he wasn't in any real danger...

I got an inkling that even when his underlings don't tell him what's going on, he knows anyway.  Cuz unless Calvados sent off a last mobile email to the Boss before he shot himself (did he really shoot himself?  did Akai really miss a gun Calvados had on him?  would Calvados use that gun to commit suicide without shooting Akai with it first?) how the heck did the Boss know to mail Vermouth with "I gave you too much freedom this time, return to my side" or whatever it was at the right moment... HMM...

oh no! the conversation between Kir and Akai. Kir: me too, I didn't think it'll go so smoothly.
like, were they trying to give a link to the FBI from the start in order to decieve them? Is Kir really a CIA agent? Akai is the one who discovered that her father was an agent, if Akai is actually a candidate to be the boss, should we really take his word for it? WE CAN'T TRUST ANYONE!!!! AHHH

well, there are a lot of flaws in this theory...

Akai being the boss doesn't make sense...but that doesn't stop if from being extremely cool. But again, who is Akai suppose to be tricking by pretending to be FBI? He's their best agent, so it's like he's fighting himself because he's bored and picks on Gin because he refused to attend his dinner party that one year.

I know it doesn't make sense, but it's fun...
Maybe he has a split personality?  :P come to think of it, we never had someone with split personality before...might be good for a movie only though...

Perhaps it's Sonoko. Beneath that vapid blonde exterior lies a heart of pure evil...  XDXD

More seriously, I'd thought it was Vermouth until she got that text... but the content and her expression and Gin's reference to her as "That Person's favourite" make me think that maybe he's the husband... y'know, how "Sharon" talked about her husband dying and "Chris" turning up at the funeral disguised as him? But of course, Sharon and Chris are the same person so I think it might've been the actual guy, whoever he was... and then, perhaps, what really happened to him was he moved to Tottori...

I have slightly crazier theories, but they've all been ficiffied if anyone cares (and it took 111 chapters so i'm REALLY not starting here XD)

I would love that.

Don't you guys think one of the many theories in this thread have hit the right one? Now Gosho has to change his ending because we spoiled it :O

I can actually picture Gosho spending a month writing the ending and feeling extremely confident only to trash it when he sees that someone already posted it in this thread. Now repeat this for the last 2 years and that answers why he has yet to end the series. ;D

So he just needs to come up with the twist that no one ever expected. The boss is the dead guy from the first episode! (the one who's head came off)

lol yeah

Gosho threw a pen at me and uttered alot of curses after i posted my theory of DC ending 'school days' style  ;D

i think the only possible end for Gosho now is if everyone gets killed by a nuclear attack - oops looks like that possibility is gone too :P
