eworm wrote: You know what? Lining the trees like this: xxxxxxxxxx makes seven four-trees lines ;)
While that would work, this isn't a trick question like that. Though the lines of trees obviously intersect, they don't coincide, and 5 rows of 4 trees is the maximum amount of 4-tree lines you can make with this method.

Also, as a clarification in case you were wondering: Though I said all 5 lines use the same spacing of trees as the other lines, that doesn't mean that each line has every tree spaced the same amount apart...

bigger hint:
Spoiler:
10 trees, 5 rows, 4 trees per row...

You know, this isn't a unique number of trees. As a matter of fact, you could expand this problem and as long as the number of trees is 4 per row, you can always make half as many rows as you have trees. Though, above 10/5/4, it probably won't be the optimal solution.

You know, Akonyl,
Spoiler:
your hints don't really help much. I mean, what the hell? "10 trees, 5 rows, 4 trees per row..." So you say that 5*4=10 ?? And I don't get what "rows" your talking about.

by "rows", I just mean lines of trees. No, 5x4 doesn't =10, but if you make the lines intersect like you have been, each tree is in more than one line and you should be able to get it. :P

As a matter of fact,
Spoiler:
you've already posted the solution to the version with 12 trees, 6 lines, and 4 trees per line.

Okay, I'll have to be going soon, so I doubt I'll manage to solve it until what you call the end of the day... Kuso!

Keep thinking about the KID riddle, people. It is freaking complicated, some of you have underestimated it... Okay, hush, you'll get to know tomorrow.

Kuso, I should've thought of that.
Give any riddle you want, Ankor, I have to go anyway.
And think about the KID one.

and ankor with the solution :V

so, in case you noticed, the reason I thought of this problem was becuase your "6 triangles with 6 matches" problem basically mirrored the 12 tree, 6 row version of the problem with the star of david. :P

Here is the brainfrying planting problem:

How to plant 9 trees in such way that they form 10 straight rows of 3 trees each :D

As tomorrow a eworm's riddle deadline I suggest that if by then nobody answers my riddle I'll post solution and the one that solves KID riddle continues.

I'm fairly sure I know the answer, but I'll leave it to someone else so I don't have to think of a new riddle :P
