imo, just make it a rule that you have to set your status to hidden and that if anyone's seen with a non-hidden status they'll be killed by the GM immediately.
if they show there status, then they will get themselves killed anyways
the point though is that if you don't actually punish it, then all the town can just not hide their status because they have nothing to hide, leaving the ones who hide their status as the BO.
True Tho I have always hid mine so I never thought about it.

If playing mafia means you're required to hide your status I'm not going to play anymore. I've never hidden my status (don't know how) and I see no reason to start. I also tend to have at least one topic on the board open CONSTANTLY so it's entirely possible that I'm listed as 'online' here even when I am asleep or out.

Nope, it tracks your activity. So the last thing you clicked is listed under "Action" here. Unless of course the last thing you did in this forum was open that one topic like an hour ago, in which case you wouldn't be counted as being "online" anymore. (Actually the timeout seems to be at 15 minutes.)
It's simple. Just hide your status whenever you're playing a round of Mafia and you can turn it off once the games over. I've always kept mine off cause it doesn't matter to me whether it shows online or not..
