Firstly this thread really got me thinking, thank you.
Now that I think about it Ran is really "guy-ish" to the girls so I'm not surprised about the presence of "Shojo-ai".
Seriously Ran always protects/befriends all the girls by purpose or accident, don't tell me you guys haven't noticed.
* Protects Sonoko on a daily basis. Think: Movie 11.
* The "Kazuha moments" that you guys just listed
* Grabs Sharon before she fell to her death (even though "she" a "he" at the time was about to kill her).
* Protects Ai from getting shot with her own body. (she's crazy lol!)
I can add to the list easily but I don't have much time right now xD.
And really it's not just the girls, but the guys (Conan, Eisuke, etc...) too. Ran's just that type of person so technically she can get paired with everyone

Ran's written as a very subtle mix between being a tom-boy and what's considered traditionally "feminine" in Japan. I find it very neat to see how she treads that fine line.
