Well, if it was like she was around the late 300's it wouldn't be a problem, the problem is usually that (with no development shown) she's now almost completely different from the last version.
True, there seems to be a gap from how Old Ai transitioned into the New Ai.

Satisfying Ai fans probably doesn't concern him very much.

But it's the truth that he is influenced by fans. He admitted this in his recent interview.
