Re: Your Favourite Books/Authors

Post by kyuuketsuki »

Well... I'll say this, there is no way I'll ever be able to do this accurately by any degree. It's just not possible...

So lets see what I can come up with... Currently my favorite books are mystery and crime driven. I'm always on the prowl for more, and I have to agree with Jd- that The Maltese Falcon is possibly one of my current favorites.

So lets jump into this...

Some authors I enjoy... [Genres will be mixed]

- Conan Doyle
- Agatha Christie
- Maurice Leblanc
- Edgar Allan Poe
- Ellery Queen
- JRR Tolkien
- Stephen King
- Feydor Dostoevsky

Authors that interest me and will start reading more of

- Issac Asimov
- Edogawa Rampo
- PD James
- Grisham [can't remember his first name]
[There are more, but none that come to mind]

Honorable mention [Authors that I liked, but only one or two books, or thats all they wrote]

- Albert Camus
- Sun Tsu
- Miyamoto Musashi
- Harper Lee
- Bram Stoker

Again, this is an abbreviated list of what I can remember. I will NEVER list what books I like because frankly... I'd be typing for hours.

yay Albert Camus!love me some French existentialist.

As much as I love JRR Tolkien and the world he created that pretty much set the bar for every fantasy epic afterwards...I find reading some of his work really hard.  He has a very peculiar writing style, especially prevalent in his LOTR series.  I love The Hobbit, because it was like the fantasy/story aspect of LOTR, but dumbed down and enjoyable to read.

Or maybe it's just the fact that I read LOTR when i was like in 4th grade and was confused as hell...but still, when I go back, it's still pretty hard to read.

My favourite author since 2007 (Yes, I never really had a favourite author till then :( ) is Christopher Pike!
Does anyone else here likes him? :D.

He writes horror, thriller, science fiction and young adult. (Not all his books are science fiction, only some).
It's a pity that he is so unknown. His stories are very, very amazing.

I would encourage those who would love to give him to try to read Whisper of Death. Even though the summary given wasn't that all interesting, the story itself is really awesome.

My favourite book would be Witch, by Christopher Pike. It touched me greatly. (Though actually in reality all his books are all my favourites).
Has anyone here read 666: The number of the beast? :).

I would like to try reading books from:
Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, Agatha Christie, Carl Sagan and Stephen King.

Does anyone has any book recommendations from these authors? :D.

Agatha Christie is very, very good. My personal favourites are "The Body In The Library" and "Murder On The Orient Express". I tend to prefer  Miss Marple to Hercule Poirot, but they're both good. Tuppence and Tommy are fun as well XD

A lot of books, mostly Mystery and Life philosophy, but right now, what interest me is "11002 Things to Be Miserable About", really amusing :)

There is LotR... and there are all the other books. I've read and reread the trilogy and the many, many compilations of the backstory more times than I can count. Though there are plenty of flaws to be found, I haven't read any other books that have come close to creating as rich and 'meaningful' world as Tolkien made.

As for the "other books", the only genre of fiction I really enjoy is fantasy (LotR influence no doubt), though there are lots of authors in different genres that I like. Some of my favorites:

Adventures+Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes: Not a big fan of Doyle's other stuff, but these cases are ridiculously fun to read and have such awesome tricks that I can overlook what I think is sort of mediocre writing.

Madame Bovary: Great character study with a masterfully created setting.

Harry Potter series: Cliched, but I enjoyed these books greatly when I read them and I still reread them pretty often.

Crime and Punishment: This is one the most unpleasant books you will ever read, in a good way.

Moby-Dick: Though it gets boring after around 200 pages, the first part of the book is a blast and the adventure element present helps keep the later parts afloat, so to speak.

Hah, no doubt Agatha Christie and her works. <33

I have read 18 mystery novels by her in half a year, and I am currently reading Murder at the Vicarage, starring Miss Marple. However, the novels I really favored the most were "Murder in the Orient Express" and "Curtain." The plots in those story were remarkably well-ordered, and just when you thought you know the culprit, Christie will shatter all your suspicions and reveal the seemingly-impossible truth. Srsly, how I adore her ingenuity. <3

I haven't read a whole lot of classics and mysteries. I tend to just go to the library and get out books that look interesting, most of which I never end up reading, and the ones I do read I often can't remember the author. Some ones that I read recently and found good are (not including manga of course):

-The Twilight series (DON'T HATE ME! *hides*)
-Lessons from a Dead Girl (mature in some parts, but a good plot line)
-I'd tell you I loved you, but then I'd have to kill you (the first in the Gahlinger Girls series)
-The one where the kid nearly jumps to his death and lands in California (yes, that's the real name)
-The Outsiders (the ending SUCKS!)
-The Red-Headed League (the first Holmes I read!)
-The first 3 Harry Potters (after that they just get too drawn out. I only finished the series so that I can say I did)

I've read others, but I have this habit of not finishing books... The books I'm reading right now are:

-The Time Traveler's Wife (but my friend stole it...)
-Cross my Heart and Hope to Spy (2nd in the Gahlinger Girls series)
-ABC murders
-A Study in Scarlet

I do not have a favourite author or book at the moment but some that I like is
Terry Pratchet (Death is really cute)
Isaac Asimov (especially I, Robot and the other robot books, but not the film I, Robot it 'cause it sucks, no offence)
Robin Hobb
Agatha Christie
Roald Dahl
Philip Pullman
Terry Goodkind
J.R.R. Tolkien

Harry Potter-series
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Pride and Prejudice

I don't read Christopher Pike much anymore, but I loved his stuff when I was in high school. Have you read his Chain Letter and Last Vampire series? They're a lot of fun.

Right now, I'm reading the Inspector Maigret mysteries. (I just learned that my library has a bunch of them.) I can tell I'm losing a lot by not reading them in the original French, but I'm enjoying them anyway.

Well... at least you know this author existed. s: .

I've haven't read Chain Letter yet (I've got the book with me though:3!), but I've read The Last Vampire.  It is fun! He's writing up new stories of The Last Vampire now, to add on to the six books. :).

I've tried reading Agathat Christie, but I haven't gotten used to her style.... yet. s:

Yay for bibliophiles. I enjoy reading and find it a little sad that the younger generations where I live want so little to do with books.  We're a book family, so whenever my younger sister in middle school says she's reading something her peers say "you read??" with some incredulity and I'm like ¬_¬ for srs?

I think there's a lot to be gained by simply reading.  Not only for entertainment purposes but as a way to easily internalize vocabulary, grammar and sentence structuring.

Well enough of my babbling, I usually read fantasy books but I've been attempting, with failure because of lack of time and sheer laziness, to dip into other things. I'd like to try to read:
Spoiler:
The Iliad
The Odyssey
The Divine Comedy
The Prince
Gulliver's Travels
Metamorphosis
I don't really have a favorite author, but if I had to pick I'd have to say J.K. Rowling, Roahl Dahl (I've noticed that the first few paragraphs of Rowling's first book reads a little like a Dahl book), Lewis Carroll and C.S. Lewis. I like Shakespeare but since I'm not an active reader and I'm terrible at symbolism his double entendres often fly right over my head lol.

My favorite books include:
Spoiler:
Chronicles of Narnia by Lewis
The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle
The Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix
Harry Potter by Rowling
The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings by Tolkien
Alice in Wonderland by Carroll
The Madman by Kahlil Gibran
Christopher Paolini's Inheritence series
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman.
I'm currently reading The Mysterious Stranger by Mark Twain.
