I don't think that the direction of the book is very important because you know how we slightly tilt the our notebooks when we write, I've actually seen some people (multiple classmates) tilt it a lot that it's almost horizontal and I thought it was strange and asked them and they said they were more comfortable that way...

What I find more important: look at the page he's writing on and the direction of the page rips, if he really wrote "nue" shouldn't the rips be under the word not above it, if he wrote "てつの" then the rips would be in the right place (unless it's a drawing error and I really hope it isn't)

-_-!? Isn't the page ripe above the word is the right one!? why don't you try it? Well, i tried, and it is hard to write tetsuno vertically with the book placed horizontally and with the angle of his hand and his head like that.

Since the man was a foreigner and only knew a few words of japanese, maybe by writing "nue" as he was dying and maybe didnt pay attention to the direction or correctness of the writing...maybe he meant to write "inu" which means a dog? I dont speak japanese so I am not sure if this is a possible mistake but as he is a foreigner mistakes are possible and probable. The dog seems kinda important for the story as I see it.

He wrote on the page furthest away from himself. If the others held the book the same way then the rip wold be below the word

the image on the left still shows that it could be

......て
......つ
......の

Its Japanese : てつの (Tetsuno)
the page is not only held upside down, but they are also looking at the wrong side of the page
the ink must have bleed through
since they didn't look at the page immediately, its possible that it got turned around when
the other two ran out of the cave

This happened in a previous case where Ran and Sonoko saw writing on a window that said
" , t e l し " which sideways was " かのう " (Kanou) the name of the killer

Question is, is this a culprit hint, a hint about the treasure, or one that connects to both?

@DCUniverseAficionado:
Spoiler:
If it's a hint pointing to someone we've seen in this chapter that'd be the Mayor. The others are outsiders of the village who've been invited by the Mayor for the occassion.
Maybe the accident wasn't so much of an accident or it was a mistake on safety.
But there's too little info to work with as of now: we'll have to wait for next file to see what happens.

I didn't want to say anything wrong so just in case I did check the part about the rip's direction before posting to make sure, as for writing with the book placed horizontally I didn't and I won't try because I'm accustomed to drawing all kinds of lines and shapes in all kind of directions due to my art practice so I wouldn't really get accurate results out of that

I'm betting its just the name of his dog.

He wouldn't have had much time to react to a landslide, if there was any kind of sabotage then he would likely not have been able to figure out that much. He probably just wanted them to take care of the dog. As a miner, some of the few japanese words that he would have to know would be names of elements such as Iron, Gold, ect. Tetsuno happens to be a name as well (鉄野), which contains the kanji for Iron, so why not the name of the dog that he owned?

On that note, everyone knows why Miners usually have animals with them right?

Also, I wonder why the dog reacted to Hajime Tsurumi in the fashion that it did? Maybe the dog has been trained to sniff out specific things? But it makes you wonder what he might have in his jacket.

Yeah, it could be a hint that he's the culprit (or will be—he hasn't done anything, yet), or he's hiding his motivations about coming to Yadori Village. I'd say the second possibility is more likely, because hinting the culprit's identity in the first file of what will be at least a 5 file case is... well...

Did he write something because he couldn't speak, for some reason? Weren't the faces of his fellow miners drawn in shadow-man fashion? Were they not from Japan, as well, or were they? They were probably Japanese, since he wrote in Japanese.

It's certainly possible that it'll be revealed that he was writing something in Japanese so his dog would be taken care of in the last few pages of the last file of the case—wouldn't be the first time Gosho would leave that one last detail for the end.

@DCUniverseAficionado: he wrote down because he got his throat hurt as a result of the landslide and couldn't speak so the other men gave him a notebook to write down.

Regarding their faces being "shadow men" style... it could and could not be relevant.

And it's possible like how jimmy says that "tetsuno" might the dog's name. We don't know for how long the victim (German origin) had been in Japan. He was described as speaking "broken Japanese" so he wasn't exactly good at it.

Well. We've got no clues right now to work with. Time will tell, as always.

How do you figure he is of German origin? The file only spoke of "foreign", right? And Charles Abel is not a German name, but rather an Anglo-Scottish name overall.

Aside from that, another thing that I've read elsewhere is that one of the suspects might be Kaitou Kid in disguise, because it's about a treasure and because Kid was mentioned at the beginning by Sonoko and that might've been foreshadowing. Some people suspect that the reporter guy might be Kid, because of his flirting with Ran and Kazuha. I'm not so sure myself about and think it is rather unlikely (why would Kid be after a gold treasure?), but Kid is not often off-hand mentioned like he is here at the beginning without consequence, so ... maybe?

@Serinox: you're right, that's weird. I had the impression I'd seen the word "Germany" somewhere... Maybe I read it somewhere else and thought it was part of this file. Sorry for the confusion.

I thought about that too at first but I changed my mind when I saw his expression when he talked about the nue

but more importantly I have to say that it's wrong anyway because the woman slapped him and his face got red and swelled a bit, if he was Kid in disguise we wouldn't have seen any red because of the mask

it depends really...in the end, that argument only works if Gosho intends to use it. If Gosho used the swelling as a cliche for slaps, it would be equivalent to "Yusaku"(Yukiko) blushing while talking about Akai during the macademy awards.
