My first impression when seeing the new file, without being able to read was: holy hell, young Shinichi is such an asshole.
Dunno how well this impression goes with the text, but I just don't like how Shinichi doesn't seem to behave even slightly like a normal kid even at the age of 4.
Spoiler:
Getting overly jealous and angry over basically nothing? Sounds like a typical 4 year old to me tbh.

Spoiler:
Imo this flashback lacks interest. Well I always looked forward to flashbacks of mc of mangas in general but in this case I'm pretty disapointed by the same old annoying personnality of shinichi even as a 4 year old. Granted not as bad as hakuba but still. It's like gosho can't show us a side to shinichi that basically makes him likeable other than the "distant cool guy". Really a shame

Spoiler:
Exactly, and some people are actually defending that he acts like an "actual four year old". Not one I'd ever seen. Plus the fact that he aleady has groupies is personally annoying to me as well.

Spoiler:
Exactly. My Ksawier is 4,5. Five in the middle of the November, and he definitely doesn't act like Shinichi acts. The only thing they might share is that they both are pretty easy-going about adults. But my Ksawier probably because he still doesn't fully recognize what an adult is, and he thinks that adults may not hurt him.
Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if Shinichi actually can read kanji! Which is pretty funny that neither Ran nor anybody else has noticed that Conan actually can read pretty complex kanjis. They probably noticed this once, or twice and pretty quickly forget. But I think it is pretty unusual for a 7 yo child to be able to read all of the kanjis as if they were just kana.

Well, I've seen four year olds behave like that plenty of times, so make of that what you will. Also, we don't know if this is his usual behaviour at this age or if he just had an especially bad day that made him rather mad.

I have a younger brother who just turned 4 this month, and he acts like that sometimes, I also meet kids in my brothers preschool that act like that, so its no different. I liked the latest files because they are adorable, however I am more into twisted plots, and BO and FBI plots ( something related to the plot. I like romance as well so I don't mind such files.

The epitome of uselessness. Why not have Sonoko's pespective next time ? And then the teacher ? And then one of the sleeping kids (that one will be convenient, 16 blank pages would do) ?

Spoiler:
Even though I'm not a big fan of Shinran (I don't dislike it but it's not very interesting) I have to admit it might be a good idea to have different point of view on a same case.
But yes, I still would have prefered another case instead of that...
And shinichi seems to be too much smart for a 4 years old kid. :/

Spoiler:
I love what Gosho has done here.

By changing the perspective to Shinichi's, we see that Ran's perception of events was not really an accurate reflection of the truth. Throughout her flashback, Ran saw Shinichi as tough, cool, super smart guy, which is what people were complaining about the last few chapters. But here, from Shinichi's point of view, we see that he was quite shy about approaching her and deliberately put on a cool face, probably to impress her (only going on pictures here, as there is obviously no translation yet). More importantly, his whole reason for putting up the act when he was giving his deduction/advice was to live up to how he imagined his idol Sherlock Holmes would act (note that he was reading Sherlock in the very beginning of the chapter). Then, when the whole class were wowed by his discussion, he is momentarily overjoyed to get so much attention and praise out of nowhere, before quickly recomposing himself in front of Ran. He's basically a kid trying to act like his hero and who is really happy when he succeeds at it and gets the praise of the whole class. It does a lot to humanize Shinichi and shows a different side of him, which is what I recall some were complaining about last week.

Looking forward to the end of the flashback!

VERY good analysis! I'm also glad Gosho went in this original direction!

I agree—really like this original (for Detective Conan) take on a story. Still waiting for translation, though. What will come of the teacher guy staring Yukiko down? What will be the crime? Will this first meeting of Ran and Shinichi turn into a case? Can't wait to see where this leads.
“Life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent. We would not dare to conceive the things which are really mere commonplaces of existence. If we could fly out of that window hand in hand, hover over this great city, gently remove the roofs, and and peep in at the queer things which are going on, the strange coincidences, the plannings, the cross-purposes, the wonderful chains of events, working through generations, and leading to the most outre results, it would make all fiction with its conventionalities and foreseen conclusions most stale and unprofitable.”
