What do you mean the story didn't go anywhere? It is the rise and fall of a superhero/villain and his friendship with other superheroes. That's basically the story.
Besides, explaining stuff and adding EPIC!1! stories is what killed Hitchcock for me. If it's not gonna be good enough, please don't bother explaining stuff.
The only valid complaint about the movie are the characters personalities, especially the less serious parts. I don't agree with it necessarily since it seemed real and fun instead of just teenagers being annoying, horrible human beings but I can see why people would get annoyed by it.
See, I like the characters' personalities myself; I don't think I'd hang out with any of them myself, but I like the way the three of them interact with each other and how it moves the story. I think it made for a well-told, interesting and ultimately all the more heartbreaking story.
I have to agree that I liked Hitchcock better when it was just Will Smith being a hilarious asshole superhero learning to be a vaguely heroic super-Will Smith. That's why I'm quite glad that they didn't stick a full backstory into
Chronicle; the story was about the three guys as people more than about their superpowers, and it stayed as being about the three guys until the end.
