Last wish before the world ends!

Well, as we all know the world is scheduled to face its last day i.e on 21st December 2012.

   

We are really confident that the same is not gonna happen for sure.

But, if the situation was something like that.. share whatever comes to your mind first. What would you want to achieve, do, share... anything that you would love to do before the world ends. Oh, but I got it from the news, not from facebook. Apparently a new wall/house was discovered that had another calendar on it that proved the actual date is a few thousand years later.
That plus there have been some students that found out the calculations used to get to that date were faulty.
I don't think either of those things come from facebook

have an actual link to that? Because people say plenty of stuff like that without any actual evidence, and then that continues on as people use the original person's claim in place of evidence :x

It's also possible, if the date in question is "a few thousand years later", that it's just referring to the fact that their calendar doesn't magically stop counting on December 21st and that it's just the end of the current b'ak'tun, which is synomomous with "really really long period of time". That wouldn't change December 21st being the end of the current b'ak'tun though.

But then that would extend to wishes on what we could do together
Really, I don't have any wishes: I just wanna keep on living and experiencing all sorts of new things

That's why I can't be bothered to believe in the world ending. My schedule for living is already cramped as it is. And a quote that I like about the whole thing:
"Whenever the topic of the apocalypse comes up, always deny it. A majority of the time you'll be right. And if you're wrong...well, no one will be around to say 'I told you so'."

this is just a myth spread by facebook, the idea that "Mayans didn't take leap years into account" is meaningless anyway because they didn't have months or years the same way that the Gregorian calendar does. The "December 21st" date only exists as a conversion from the long count calendar to Gregorian, which takes leap years into account.

Let's, for just a second, like... assume the Mayans gave the date of December 21st, 2012, and they meant this exact day in this exact year. They didn't, we know that they didn't. But, let's assume for a second that they did.

Why would we ever expect them to be right?

Here is a great bit of wisdom passed on by the Mayans courtesy of "The Mayans for Kids" (which I find both equally adorable and fascinating):

"All of the men, but none of the women, used mirrors. In the ancient Maya world, looking into a mirror was an act of courage. The Maya believed that monsters from the Place of Awe could reach through the mirror, and yank you into the Otherworld."

Well then, that settles that. Hide yo' wife. Hide yo' kids. Them monsters be kidnappin' errbody out there.

I'm not sure if you're aiming that towards me or what, but aside from saying otherwise for funsies, I know that this was not supposed to be some "end of the world" and is really just the end of part of their calendar. All I'm saying is that the calculation of the end of the current b'ak'tun (the date which people erroneously attribute to being the end of the world) is still December 21st, regardless of what people say about leap years or whatever.

I actually disagree with Jd- here, for the mere fact that the Mayans never said the world was ending. They never set an ending date to their calendar. 21 December 2012 is the date that was converted into Mayan calendar to be the date of the 13th Baktun (A bunch of fun math stuffs was involved). What does that mean exactly? That they are reaching the 13th Baktun on their calendar. Their long count calendar will read 13.0.0.0.0. This is aside from the fact that the Baktun is not the highest denomination for lengths of time they had on their calendar.

Allow me to copy and paste something from someone whom knows more about this stuff than I do on the Randi Foundation forums...

The Maya's used the following time units:

- Uinal (20 days)

- Tun (360 days or 18 Uinals)

- Katun (20 Tuns, about 20 years)

- Baktun (20 Katuns, about 400 years)

- Piktun (20 Baktuns, 8000 years)

- Kalabtun (20 Piktuns, 160,000 years)

- Kinchiltun (20 Kalabtuns, 3.2 million years)

- Alautun (20 Kinchiltuns, 64 million years)

- Hablatun (20 Alautun, 1.2 billion years)

Now I know exactly why, despite them having a denomination for 1.2 BILLION YEARS, that people think that their calendar is ending on the 13th Baktun. It is because, according to Mayan mythos, we are in the 4th creation. The last creation (the third creation) lasted 13 Baktun before it met its destruction. But honestly, there is nothing, and I mean nothing, in their history or writings that suggests that creations must last 13 Baktun. That was just the length of the LAST CREATION!

That is like predicting the length of a regime based on how long the Huns ruled over Asia, how long Alexander the Great ruled, or Napoleon, the length of time Rome lasted, and so fourth. "OMG! AMERICA IS GOING TO BE WIPED OFF THE FACE OF THE EARTH IN 2226! BECAUSE THAT IS EXACTLY HOW LONG THE ROMAN EMPIRE LASTED! WE'RE DOOMED! DOOMED I TELL YOU! ANOTHER 213 YEARS AND IT IS ALL OVER!" Length of time of a previous duration of something lasting is not a prediction for the next.
