This series deserves a Topic!
For anyone who doesn't know it:
This Seinen manga has been running since 1989 and has 331 chapters so far.(Oct. 15. 2012) It is drawn by Kentaro Miura. The art is fantastic and the anime series' (covering the Golden Age arc) OST is made of ear worms.
Story: The protagonist is Guts, a (former) mercenary who is fighting monsters... And that covers the first few chapters.
The story is getting more complex with every batch of chapters that is being released, the characters are deep and everything is very realistic (for a world where magic is very much real)

The only downside to this series is the fact that there are lonk breaks between chapters.

What do you think about Silke's (I'm using that name because it actually is a name and I have no clue how to spell the official translations) explanation regarding the child?
Personally I think he looks too much like a mix of Guts and Casca to only be the avatar.

Fairies are still mysterious entities, I won't make guesses just yet. The mangaka could still pull an Deus Ex Machina on us. Or maybe these fairies can get perfect avatars to get close to people.

just read through this because the second movie came out and I realized it was getting to the point where things were gonna deviate from the show (skull knight/etc), so I may as well read the manga before seeing the movies' fast-forward version of things
definitely awesome, but now I think it's time to never read it again, because the point it's at now is probably the cleanest place to stop that the series will ever have in my lifetime.

by "just read through this", I meant that I'd caught up 
killed the sea god and went with the mermaids, then it switched perspectives to somewhere else for a chapter or two before reaching the present.
