Ooooooooor Watson was made to be female because the creators wanted to just go a different route than most other series/films involving Sherlock and Watson. Let's not attribute homophobia where there may not be any.

That's what I'm afraid of with this one. If they can manage to keep it totally platonic, it can be great. I think it'll spiral downhill quick if they go the romantic route.
Well I'm betting that they went for making Watson a female because it's hard for a lot of the general public (in this country) to accept a gay couple- especially when they're the stars of the show. I'm surprised The New Normal exists. ._. I'm betting you that's why Watson is a woman and not a man.
Or they wanted to put a new spin on things and bring something new to the table : V
That's possible, too... but I doubt it. They haven't done anything actually creative in a LONG time.

I wouldn't classify making Watson female as "actually creative" anyway, since they probably just wanted a little bit of controversey/attention to help separate it from the BBC show. Sure it's only a superficial difference, but it works.
Doesn't mean she's just a she for romance purposes, though.
Having now seen both episodes: I'm enjoying it so far.
A smart, attractive female lead that has more importance than just "intended romantic interest"? I approve. Doesn't happen nearly often enough. And Lucy Liu is always awesome.

Look at her, so far it looks like they took away Watson's awesomeness of COURSE she's for romantic purposes! XD

Why do I get the feeling that to you, Watson's awesomeness was taken away purely by the fact that she's a woman?
I, personally, think she's pretty damn awesome as is, for the reasons I said before.
I don't know WHY you would get that, considering I'm all for women that can kick butt (for god sake Kazuha is my favorite character in DC and I myself am a woman who hates sexist people)... I think you're just looking for reasons to dislike me more than you already do but we would be drifting off-topic to talk about that here.
I don't. As said earlier, her BG story takes away from the awesomeness that it Watson in general. If they took advantage of having Watson played by a freaking Charlie's Angel then we might get somewhere with her being more than a tag-along main-character romantic interest. xD Lucy Liu is PERFECT to play Watson they just need to write her better and bring that fire-power out.

Because something in a couple of your posts sounded like you were complaining purely about them making her a girl.

Well, we're only two episodes in. If you think that way now, I would say don't make any solid judgments yet, if you want to like the series. Give it more a chance before making sweeping generalizations about the writers and actors.
Then again, if you don't want to like the series, and prefer to hate on it simply because it isn't Sherlock, then by all means, do so. (I'm not saying you are doing that, just that I've definitely seen that attitude amongst other Sherlock fans.)

Well where did you GET that from? XD What did you pick out that sounded like I was making it about Watson being a girl? I actually kind of like that. xD
I *do* want to like the series. Especially since it looks like it could be cute and a little bit of a ride until Sherlock comes out.
Yeah, no. I was a fan of the movies before I was a fan of the show. XD I had never really had much of an interest in Sherlock Holmes until Detective Conan but now after two amazing movies and six episodes of BBC's Sherlock I want to like a lot MORE about Sherlock. I just find it truly difficult to get into the show when comparing everything else I've seen and how awesome I know Lucy could play that part IF THEY LET HER! DX

Also, need to catch up on these 'cause I had internet problems the first time I tried watching and then got distracted by other things (mostly school related D:)

Well, they are getting on with the explaining. In the second episode, they discuss why she flinches on seeing bodies. Hopefully, it'll pan out. They couldnt just make her a war medic or something// That'd be too damn similar. Though its true, Lucy Liu rocks......

2) Insulting the person you're talking to... you're really not helping your argument this way y'know

The blind and hardcore Sherlock fans are currently and always will be looking for reasons to justify their senseless disparaging of something that's of absolutely no harm to their precious fandom. Yes, I said "fandom", because Sherlock is a show about its fandom, fanworks, and shipping far more than the actual show itself anymore (as far as its fanbase is concerned). I saw Sherlock on the very first day that it aired and watched every subsequent episode exactly the same and have enjoyed it. I did the same with Elementary so far and have enjoyed both episodes. No one has to compare the two in a way that is clearly motivated by a mindset akin to "I have to defend one over the other or else I'm not a true fan". People that say, "It's definitely worse than Sherlock, but that's not why I hate it," when they then go on to defend why it's bad while frequently referencing Sherlock are not fooling anyone. If you can't maintain objectivity due to being heavily invested in another property, there's no shame in admitting it. All you do when you refuse to admit that is convince others of exactly what you're trying not to. After they are called out on this (and it becomes obvious to everyone, often including themselves), they backpedal and try to justify it with fewer mentions of Sherlock but with even more poorly supported and subjective arguments that could even be applied to the original series they were defending.
I'm not here to debate the validity of what is clearly a well-evidenced fact, both in this topic and elsewhere on the internet. If someone has already taken such a position (whether they will admit it or even realize it themselves or not), the prospect of attempting to change their minds is already an effort made in vain.
What I will say is this: If you are a fan of Sherlock Holmes, the character, there is no reason to not want him to reach as wide an audience as possible. Even if you absolutely loathed Elementary with every fiber of your being, there is nothing the show can do to harm other Holmes interpretations (whether it be Jeremy Brett's Granada adaptations, Sherlock, or the Robert Downey, Jr. films) or harm Holmes himself. Everyone knows what the original Sherlock Holmes written by Conan Doyle represents, and if this series or any other gets people to go back and look at the source material and enjoy it, that can only be a very, very good thing. Holmes is an adaptive character--if you are familiar with his history, you will know that. Holmes survives where other characters from his period have remained stagnate because of that flexibility and because he is able to maintain that enduring relevance that remains of interest to people even over a century after his creation. Holmes was interesting in 1888 and he's interesting in 2012, whether it's shot in the subway of modern day New York, a country estate from Victorian England, or in a museum of contemporary art in central London. Holmes will always be relevant so long as we let him be and not try to prohibit others from bringing him to life to a new audience.
