Most of the competitions I went to were Judo competitions and I sucked at Judo, so....option 4 it is.

I don't know... I haven't placed at all since I've moved up to the 17-29 year old division (not that I've competed any more than 4 times since then), but I used to place a lot...
I think I have more 3rd place trophies than the other two, so I'll go with that.

Mostly, smash bros and that's usually 13-4th (I've placed higher, but 13-4th is more common).

the competitions i was in were quiz bowl/trivia competitions, with many different schools, we did well, but it's hard to pin down the exact level of performance.

Usually 5th or so.
In competitions with ~20 participants, not all that bad. I did get 1st once in a (small) Chess tournament, and got 1st once with my team in the Munich Chess School Championship (and then 4th in the Bavarian).
In the Mathematical Kangaroo, I usually got 1st or 2nd, but except for the one time with 150 points, that only meant that I was above a certain sum of points (which a lot of people were).
Went with the 4th option.

I don't compete very often. If I do, depends on the competition. I tend to place well in academic/writing-oriented competitions and not so well in physical/performance-oriented competitions.
