Conan: Ah, here we go. The start of it all - the dreaded brighter colors.
Haibara: I do agree that brighter colors don't mesh very well with a show centering on murders...

Haibara: However, this early design choice of having more pastel like colors wasn't necessarily a bad one. While the desired effect of not being too dark so as to make viewers strain their eyes was achieved, the pastel palette was able to give a "washed out" look that still fit with the darker undertone of the series, thereby adding an atmosphere to replace the one lost alongside the darker colors. It, of course, isn't as good an atmosphere as the one in the beginning days, but you have to give credit where it's due: they accomplished their goal with the least amount of loss possible.

Conan: While that's all true...things changed coming into the five hundreds. We lost that "pastel" look, and...it...wasn't all that good.
Haibara: You're right. Going brighter was just stupid. Lost all kinds of atmosphere that wasn't necessary to throw away. The pastel look accomplished their goal, why go brighter?

Conan: You know, I think it's because Sonoko and Kogoro were brought onto the design team. Kogoro just wanted money so he went along with any of the ideas thrown out and Sonoko...is Sonoko. She probably thought brighter colors was more "fashionable"
