End of Night 1...

Let it be said that the town of Beika knew how to host a red carpet event.

The paparazzi were going crazy, adding sporadic flashes of light to the otherwise darkened ballroom. The movie whose premiere the ball was celebrating had gone off smashingly; the stars were carefree in their lovely tuxes and dresses, and as the party commenced, all the citizens of Beika proved that they were not only splendidly attractive, but also splendid ballroom dancers.

Everyone’s eyes were drawn to one woman in particular. People simply stopped dancing to watch her, as if she were the princess in a Disney movie, as if she’d arrived to the ball in a horse and pumpkin carriage, as if they had nothing better to do than glory in her reflected beauty. It was a manga, but if it had been a movie, the music would have undoubtedly stopped the happy uptempo jig it had been previously playing and instead started playing a slow waltz.

The lady seemed used to the spotlight. Despite the harsh light, her undoubtedly handsome partner’s face was in convenient shadow; it was obvious the author wanted the reader, like the other party attendees, to look only at the beautiful lady and totally forget about having fun themselves. She had a serene smile on her face, as if she were the happiest woman on Earth (or certainly in Beika). In a town full of hot people, this woman was, at least for tonight, the hottest.

However, all good things come to an end, and as the clock struck midnight, the fact that the lady’s partner’s face was hidden became…more significant. She looked up into his face with a glowing expression, an expression that slowly turned to a look of incomprehension, then horror. For in that moment, the dancing lady recognized her partner, as if a veil of plot convenience had been lifted from her eyes.  How could she be so blind? She was…she was…she was dancing with the Shadowman!

But it was too late to call out for help. There was a dull pop, and the lady found that her floaty pink gown was slowly turning red. Her partner bowed mockingly to her and backed away as the music faded, disappearing back into the crowd, and KainTheVampire (Yukiko), the beautiful star of the red carpet, sank slowly to the ground, blood pooling around her in the spotlight as the crowd began to scream.
