Megaupload taken down by US government

Post by Conan-kun »

Wow, all those uploads are now gone.  I am sure it is going to be a big hassle for some people to start all over from zero.

I just saw that too. My wrath and my sadness are impossible to describe in this post. But I feel like I'll kill myself.

Man will go down into the pit, and all his thoughts will perish. The uneasy consciousness, which in this obscure corner has for a brief space broken the contented silence of the universe, will be at rest. Matter will know itself no longer. Did we just lose the entire Conan archive uploaded to Megaupload? (http://forum.dctp.ws/viewtopic.php?t=710.0)

The thing is megaupload has taken action when it comes to copyrighted content; they remove links (though only when asked I bet).  How does something like PirateBay stay afloat but not megaupload?  I've heard some weird stuff about how PirateBay has constantly changed servers to other countries to avoid something like this..but still.

from what I hear, MU would take down the link itself, but not all the other mirror links that might point to the same file on their server.

My biggest wonder is actually what took "them" so long to shut it down.

They had it coming, but had they not made tons of profit due to the site, I think their existence would have been longer.

I'm assuming legal stuff, with lawsuits and what not.  Which is why Congress wants to push for SOPA, because if they even have an inkling..an accusation is enough for them to take action.

Excerpt:
"A service provider shall take technically feasible and reasonable measures designed to prevent access by its subscribers located within the United States to the foreign infringing site (or portion thereof) that is subject to the order, including measures designed to prevent the domain name of the foreign infringing site (or portion thereof) from resolving to that domain name's Internet Protocol address. Such actions shall be taken as expeditiously as possible, but in any case within 5 days after being served with a copy of the order, or within such time as the court may order."

My entire music collection I was proud of.... DESTROYED!!!!!

At least I still have all the original files. Time to find a new upload station.

Any recommendations?

TBH, it was most likely the legal scuffle they had over on Youtube. The one a few months ago where they had legally paid artists to make them music, put it on Youtube, and when it was super popular another record company claimed copyright so it would be taken down. I heard Megavideo then took legal action against them over it, and whoops here we are, of all the sites Megaupload was gone after by the FBI? Someone has friends in high places.
