Clefairy was going to be Ash's partner but at the last minute the producers decided that they liked Pikachu better.

The original version of Red and Green never actually left Japan. Red and Blue in the rest of the world are actually based off of the Japanese Blue, which had souped up music and graphics including significantly less disturbing Pokemon art.

The character of Looker is rumoured to have first appeared in Red and Blue, as the random man on the SS Anne who feels the need to tell you that he's a secret agent for the international police.

There was originally intended to be a female player character in Red and Blue, but there wasn't enough space in the software for her data so her character design was instead retooled for the "Lass" trainer class. She is still in some very early pieces of concept artwork, and these images were the basis of the character Blue (Green in some English translations) in the manga Pokemon Adventures.

Speaking of Pokemon, everyone should get the OST for Pokemon Heartgold and Soulsilver.  Amazing tracks, and contains the old GBC tracks from Gold and Silver.

why did they look so godang ugly back then?  I remember playing the games when I was younger and when I heard the pokemon cries thinking they'd be cute like "pikachu! chu!" and got "DEERRREERRRRR" I was very sad.

Golbat was actually arguably better in RG artwork than the RB artwork. At least it didn't have that TONGUE.

Other random trivia:

The entire reason for Cinnabar being an exploded wreck in Gold and Silver was Missingno. Missingno appeared as a result of corrupted battle data, the water tiles east of Cinnabar being incapable of loading battle data from the correct file locations and instead attempting to read other data as battle data.

A truly epic glitch in Red and Green allowed you to beat the Elite Four in under five minutes withe one Pokemon by teleporting you directing to the Hall of Fame from Pallet.

The Last Rocket from G/S/C/HG/SS talks funny because he's actually from Unova. In BW, you can find him with his family, haven given up his life of crime and not told his wife and child that he ever had one.

The Ghost type was originally meant to be the counter for the ridiculously overpowered Psychic type in Gen I, but this failed epically because the only three Ghost-types in the game were also half-Poison, making the Psychic type supereffective against them. This was the reason for the Dark and Steel types being created in the next game.

Cynthia's Garchomp has maxed-out IVs and EVs. So does Joey's Rattata, which means that it really is in the top percentile of Rattata.

Bill is a cousin of the Kimono Girls and his mother was apparently one in the past.

Precisely. The Dev Team blew up Cinnabar to give them an excuse to completely redesign the Cinnabar area with an eye to avoiding the glitch. In-universe, you could say that they blew up Cinnabar to kill Missingno XD

Really, though, they just needed to redesign the area to avoid the problems with loading battle data.
