A little softer than "root." It sounds the same as when you say "shook."

I'm used to write with the German abbreviations, and sometimes use them unintenionally. I also used "D" (Dame) instead of Q, but noone noticed. And, athough I might be wrong, isn't rook pronounced like root and therefore different from rock?
No problem.  :)  I get to learn both chess notation and German!  So it's T for Turm, D for Dame.  What are the other pieces called in German?  As for what "rook" sounds like in English, it all depends on the speaker's accent (British, American, Australian, etc...)

Neat!  It's interesting how in German some of the pieces are named after what they do (like runner or jumper) instead of a person they might represent.  I like farmer.  It's much better than pawn, IMHO.

After consulting a dictionary I found a better word for "Läufer": loper. The translation of runner would be more like "Renner".

Ahh, that makes sense then.  I didn't realize lope was a horse term:

Just to make sure we are talking about the same thing and  I understood the translation of LEO right:
"Laufen" is a normal verb of moving, not bound to any animal or to humans. It's somewhere between to run and to go. The movement is similar to jogging, but "Laufen" is not meant for training or to last for a very long time. A distance you would normally "Laufen" is about 1000m or more(1/2 mile or more), in opposite of running. Someone without special training couldn't run more than 500m. You would "Laufen" in case of a marathon.
I hope you are able to give me the English expression now^^

Hmm... I'm not sure there is an English word for that concept.  In terms of speed, there's Sprint > Run > Jog > Walk > Stroll / Meander > Saunter > Crawl > Creep > Edge...  There isn't a word that means a slow run but not meant for long periods of time.  Of all of them, jog seems to be the closest matching term.

In general, though, those terms are only used for humans.  There's a different set of words used for horses, for example, lope, canter and gallop, and it sounds like lope might be the best word when it comes to a horse.

"Noone" is actually incorrect, though I can understand people using it based on the words "everyone", "someone" and "anyone".  In this case, however, "no one" has to be two separate words or has to be hyphenated, "no-one", though that's used less frequently.  IMHO, English is a really bad language because there are so many inconsistencies and exceptions.
