Re-reading some of the post-Athena arc has confirmed for me that Conan is blatantly an inspiration (which isn't a surprise for multiple reasons). Seriously, the same incredibly slow pacing where a single arc takes years, romantic comedy that is sometimes serious but almost never goes anywhere and new mysterious characters (one of which might as well be the newest member of the Black Organization). Not to mention the plot twist I mentioned before.
