I've never played a FE game if only because I fear getting in situations where a character dies that make me go "noooo, now I gotta restart so they don't die!"
You'd only have to restart a level, not the game. And from FE8 onward, the levels aren't exactly super long. If you want super long, try the original games. FE4's levels are like 5 times the time-length and size as the newer game maps. Which made for quite an adrenaline rush when I thought a level would end when I capped the castle in the north-east of the map, so I zerged it with 90% of my forces (remaining 10% at my base in the south-center), only to have enemy reinforcements show up from the south-west. They then zerged my base. Thank goodness I left an amazing guardian to bottleneck the entrance to the base. By the time I got my forces back, there was a backlog of about 12 enemies waiting for a chance to attack.
As far as mages go, I didn't use them at all in my playthrough of FE7. Too squishy. I started using them from FE8 onward, though.
FE4 maps are something of an exception and you can just think of it as having multiple levels in the same map. Most of the older games are closer to the recent ones as far as map size goes.
Also, Nino is sweet because she can avoid most attacks and thus her lame defense doesn't mean much! Just level her up quickly and she'll be an absolute machine.

Ah, are they? Only other early one I played was the 1 DS remake, which still had big maps compared to newer ones (though obviously not as big as FE4).

It's been a long time since I played any FE games (2005 I think) and while the maps certainly are bigger than in recent ones (when I say recent I mean 7/8/Path, I haven't played anything released after Path) they also aren't even close to FE4 size.
Also, everyone should play 5, it is challenging and excellent story-wise, though it does work better if you have played 4 already.

FE10's maps are even smaller than FE9's. And I still haven't finished FE1DS. It's not hard, but it just got sooooo repetitive. I think I was on chapter 18 or 19 out of 26 or something.

Anyone realize that FE12 was released in Japan... 2 years ago, yet hasn't been released anywhere else yet?
To be fair, just like "FE11", it's only a remake (specifically, FE11 is Fe1, and FE12 is Fe3). And since FE3 itself is a remake and expansion of FE1, it kind of makes sense that it wasn't released on that basis alone. If they ever make another new Fire Emblem, I assume it'd get localized in most places.

I'd be okay with a sequel to 8 as well. What I liked about that one were the tower and ruins that you could go through multiple times. Of course, I still can't finish the ruins without losing someone (and so can't unlock Cormag's brother, Glenn, in the postgame).

I might wake up early and go running. I also might wake up and win the lottery. The odds are about the same.
