Re: book club
why do we need a club to read books?
I really never understood that... Why force yourself to read books you might not like just to discuss them? Why not find people who like the same books you do and discuss with those people... This is the age of the internet, can't be that hard.

on a more serious note, a book club with random people is sort of pointless imo. as for the first point (going out of order wooo), if you enjoy reading and discussion, it is still fun (unless the book sucks, which usually doesn't happen).

Re: book club
Because people like to try out something new? You can not like a movie but be able to discuss the personalities of the characters and the main theme of each book. Did you like every book you were forced to read in school? Did it mean that you couldn't discuss the ideas and themes? I don't like most of William Shakespeare's work. Doesn't mean that I can't discuss Macbeth with someone if I had to.kyuuketsuki wrote: why do we need a club to read books?

This being the "age of the internet", means that certain people like certain things, even if it means that you, shockingly enough, don't like those things. Some people like the idea of a book club, some people, like me, don't. Doesn't mean that there's a problem if someone else wants to do it. If it bothers you that much, then shut the hell up and read a different thread instead of feeling the need to pick at everything that you don't like.

Re: book club
Hm.. I am an author myself. I write some teen-novels as well as short stories in a few magazines (in Indonesian, of course). so I`m not really against a book club. but in a community like this, it`s hard to discuss some books. why?
1. Not all the books you want to discuss available in everywhere. alright, let`s say you want to discuss some Hans Christian Anderson`s books. Oh please, they don`t get printed here.
2. Continued from number one, let`s say you have the e-book and give it to me so that I can read it and discuss it with you. But book is harder to understand than a movie. and of course since our native language is different, reading an english book makes me bored like hell. And may be I will miss some important point of the book.
3. Suppose the book is available everywhere. Not all of us read them. let`s say JK Rowling`s book (I don`t think there is a country that didn`t know Harry Potter). but let`s say I dislike some magic story. so even though the book available here, I don`t read them so I can`t discuss it with you.

Re: book club
perhaps my original post was a bit vague (obviously it was, given that it was 7 words long). i was/am certainly not anticipating that anything more than a handful of people would be interested in this- i figured maybe 4-5 at the most; this isn't an idea for some big project.

Re: book club
I think a book club would be an interesting idea since I like to read.
(Only I've never been part of one so I'm not quite sure what you do... Talk about books you've read and recommend others, right?)

Re: book club
it is quite flexible. what i do with some friends at school is meet once a month to talk about one specific book for an hour or so; then there is general discussion of stuff we've read and at the end a decision on what will the main book for the next month's session. obviously there are other ways to do things and of course the internet makes things considerably less formal, but that is the basic structure.Ran-neechan16 wrote: I think a book club would be an interesting idea since I like to read.

Re: book club
I'd be interested in a book club as well. It's a fantastic way to step outside your comfort zone and try reading new things. I was one of the founding members of my high school's book club, but we never got to a point where we all read the same book and talked about it. We tried, though. Mostly we just talked about whatever books we liked or had read recently.

Re: book club
I like the idea! Mostly because I usually only read detective novels, so a club like this would be a great way for me to start sth new
I think that if there weren't so many members it wouldn't be so hard to find a book that can be find in every member's language
Plus I like how you do it in RL, one book per month, that would go I think
I never was in such a club (I don't know if there are any here xD) so count me in!!

Re: book club
May I make a suggestion? Awesome.
Start with (classic) short stories that are widely available that people can read in one sitting. Hook them with the idea, and then reel them in. Then eat them.

Re: book club
yeah, the idea would definitely be to start with short stories or novellas that are in the public domain, given that not everyone has access to every book.Jd- wrote: May I make a suggestion? Awesome.
