In an interview, Tanigawa(writer) said something like "Boy meets girl. Leaves each other. And they encounter again sometime after graduating." (lol... this reminds me of Bokura Ga Ita)
It was his definition of a Mediocre school life story... which was boring...
Meaning no real progress even until they leave each other? Err... bs.
The ending was so-so, but yeah, intense romance is too early. But as okuoku-kun said, plot progression would be nice too; at least an event for the two of them where they realize even just a bit of comfortability (not necessary love) with each other...
Spoiler:
Too bad; the Disappearance arc you were talking about didn't also seem to have the plot progression thingy

I hope you are kidding right?
Spoiler:
Disappearance pretty much sets everyone firmly on Kyon's side not the group they supposedly work for including a crowning moment of awesome where Kyon tells the integrated data entity that she will tell Haruhi "I am John Smith" if they dont stop messing with Nagato (which makes her blush, HUGE event), also it firmly plants himself into the chaos by using everyones power to fix everything, Haruhi may make the craziness but only Kyon can make that craziness move. also it plants the idea that Kyon likes Haruhi just the way she is.

And as for Endless Eight's Plot Progression...
Spoiler:
It will be the main reason for the reason of the Disappearance
