Re: Today's Awesome Stories
This is a story about an Awesome Person.
Miss B was the greatest English teacher I ever had. She taught us Shakespeare by making us all amateur actors, which included allowing the two boys playing Hamlet and Laertes to duel with rulers across the classroom. She also taught my Higher class all of the sexual jokes in Shakespeare's plays on the express agreement that the head of department did not find out (The best being that "thing" was actually slang for "penis" in Shakespeare's day. So when Hamlet says "The king is a thing..." he's saying that the king is a dick. And considering that, in a similar fashion, "nothing" was slang for the female genitalia, and Hamlet's next line is "of nothing..." XDXD).
She taught us about Iambic Pentameter and other beats by taking us out in the hallways to alternate between stepping for weak beats and jumping for strong beats and giving us each a different poem to race down the hall.
When the school banned the teachers from giving us sweets, she brought in Mars Bars and said "These are not Mars Bars. They are health bars in wrappers that startlingly resemble Mars Bars. Do they taste like Mars Bars to you?"
Us: *around a mouthful of Mars Bar* "Not at all, Miss B!"
After my Advanced Higher class left our exam, which had gone on an hour after the end of school, including spending an hour dissecting a poem about a downtrodden housewife killing and cooking a wild rabbit for her husband's dinner, and another two hours writing about Sylvia Plath's relationship with her mother as it is expressed in her poems (negatively is an understatement), despressed and exhausted, we headed back to the classroom to get our bags. And found that Miss B had stayed long after everyone else had gone home, and had set out bottles of fizz, bowls full of sweets and crisps, and plates of brownies and giant cookies. We stayed and partied for another hour.
On our very last day of high school ever, she gave each student in my Advanced Higher English class, the eight of us who had spent the year studying in depth the poems of a woman who despised her parents, her husband, and herself (she attempted suicide three times and managed it the fourth time), and had also spent the year studying a book longer than the latter Harry Potter books and more messed up than a Monty Python sketch (though without humour)... she gave us each a Mr Men/Little Miss book of our very own, with a little handwritten note inside the cover. Here's what it said inside of my Little Miss Magic book, which I now treasure forever:
"Lottie, you are a legend! It could only be "Miss Magic" for you. If has been a pleasure to watch your progress over the years. I just know you are going to do something marvellous... I can't wait to see what!! Stay in touch. Good luck at Uni (Not that you'll need it!)
Miss B -x-"
This was both awesome and probably the Crowning Moment of Heartwarming for my entire life. She gave us each a hug, too, even Scott, with whom she had been engaged in open warfare all year.
So this post is dedicated to you, Miss B, awesome teacher, friend, and all-around Ultimate Person of Awesome. Walking into your classroom every day is what I miss most about high school. ♥

Re: Today's Awesome Stories
It's bizarre. I hated being at school in general so much, but on my last day, walking away and knowing I'd never go back... I actually cried. Part of it's missing people like teachers, who you never really see in real life, and part of it's the knowledge than you're going to have to be a part of the REAL world now, and isn't that just scary as hell...shin_ichi01 wrote: Darn it, I almost cried when I read mangaluva's post... Re: Today's Awesome Stories
speaking of seeing teachers in real life, there was one time when I was taking a walk with a friend of mine at college (we went to the same high school) and we're like "oh man it'd be funny to run into [AP Physics Teacher] randomly, wonder what he's up to", and as we enter the crosswak at a 4-way stop, we look at one of the cars, whose driver is looking at us with a puzzled expression, turns out to be the teacher :Vmangaluva wrote:It's bizarre. We ended up talking for half an hour or so, before the teacher said he actually had to get home.

I walked into my elementary school teacher a month ago or so. We talked for hours.Akonyl wrote:speaking of seeing teachers in real life, there was one time when I was taking a walk with a friend of mine at college (we went to the same high school) and we're like "oh man it'd be funny to run into [AP Physics Teacher] randomly, wonder what he's up to", and as we enter the crosswak at a 4-way stop, we look at one of the cars, whose driver is looking at us with a puzzled expression, turns out to be the teacher :Vmangaluva wrote:It's bizarre. Also: Miss B**** might very well be the most awesome teacher ever.

Re: Today's Awesome Stories
I served one of my old teachers at Argos, and she recognized me despite having not taught me for ten years. Bizarrely, she recognized me straight away, despite this being, aside from the decade thing, shortly after my dramatic charity haircut where I lost more than two feet of hair. People I saw on a daily basis didn't recognize me at first at the time. She recognized me, asked after my little brother, asked if I was still reading all of the time (HELL YES XDXD) and we generally had a great chat. It was awesome.Dus wrote:I walked into my elementary school teacher a month ago or so. Re: Today's Awesome Stories
She didn't actually recognize me, so we only chatted for a couple minutes when we actually met, but when I arrived at home she called and apologized at length about not recognizing me and then we chatted for an hour or two. And I remember you mentioning that.mangaluva wrote:I served one of my old teachers at Argos, and she recognized me despite having not taught me for ten years. @mangaluva
She sounds like a pretty awesome teacher!
I'm going off to wallow and such, though, because I had honestly thought your post was going to end with a "R.I.P." and that kind of bothers me.
It's great that people post such things about their teachers without them actually having passed!
