Actually... I read something about this.

The only reason we can understand what it says is because we can rearrange the letters in our heads (not necessarily consciously) and deduce the proper meaning.  If, however, someone less familiar with the language (a child, if you will) were to try and read it, it wouldn't make sense, because they haven't been exposed to the words enough to figure it out.  So, in other words, spelling IS important.

If Mark Summers can host Double Dare they can take it.

@Commi: Why are small children on the internet? And I didn't say spelling wasn't important.

It has nothing to do with small children having internet access.  It's about whether spelling is important.  Summary:  it is. :P

@ Commi.... having children on line at the age where they cannot recognize the words yet is quite .... bad....
P.S. I didn't say spelling is not important ::) and I'm sure prof specified "minor" spelling mistakes :P

@ prof: It's "Sentence" XD

Alright, alright!

It doesn't have to be children, that was just an example.

It can be anyone who isn't familiar enough with the language to recognize the words - perhaps someone who is just now learning English.  The point was that the paragraph you posted is irrelevant.  Yes, it is amazing that the human mind can do such a thing, but it is not something that is automatically done.  There must be prior preparation in order for it to actually work.  The 'preparation' I'm speaking of is learning the language/being exposed to it in high enough quantities (and actually understand it, mind you).  Without that, it's just a jumble of letters.

::) LOL..... Yep, I understand your point, but keep in mind that English is not the only language that can be jumble together to test the human minds, you can jumble a French paragraph, give it to an adult French person, and the chances are high that they'll be able to read it. Not to mention, I'm sure that paragraph was not the complete study :P, and the study was most likely focused on a narrow range of people. If you're talking about "preparation" as in knowing the words and the meanings, then sure, apparently the test subjects are these types of people, if you're talking about people who couldn't read English in the first place... well, I'm sure they can read their own language jumbled up, too... that is if they know how to read and their native language is not written in characters :P

Yes, Eve, the language itself is also irrelevant.

The point still stands:  spelling is important.
