The first series followed the story a little bit though. But all the good parts were taken out. Kotarou wasn't even there!

What does this mean?
There are 3 series.
Negima! - follows the first part of the manga but later turned into a different direction. Has an AO ending.
Negima!? - completely different from the manga. Has different story, same characters, feels more like shoujo than shounen (IMO)
Negima OADs - Completely follows the manga but starts in the very middle of the story.
You forgot Negima!! the live action series (don't get me started on how that turned out...)
Negima! (the first anime series) turned out horrible the animation studio ruined it with bad filler, bad animation, bad artwork, bad story changes..
Negima?! the second anime series was made by shaft and was made as a strictly gag series along the lines of the rest of their series like Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Pani Poni Dash. (its actually pretty good if you dont mind it not following the manga.)
And on the girls really most of them are rather normal only 2 or 3 are really annoying, the first 2 books its more of an introduction to everyone and then the character focus goes toward what would become Ala Alba.

I posted the raw last page, if ya want to put 2 and 2 together... its not like the chapter has alot of text anyway.
