bluekaitou: This is a story following the events of the great battle between Akonyl and the alien bee army, the latter assembled to conquer and enslave the human race.
...
Phoenix could not believe her eyes. Only a few hours earlier, she had been in deep conversation with Akonyl. Now her friend was lying on the ground, fatally wounded. It was the most horrible of sights. Shock and stunned adrenaline rose up inside of her and for a moment she thought she was going to explode. Somehow, she managed to keep it down.
Phoenix turned to Kleene, in time to see her rush forward. Two of the Queen's giant drones pointed their needles to halt her steps, but the Queen herself signaled them to let her through.
Kleene approached her dying lover, dropping down to her knees and reaching out a hand to clasp Akonyl's. His were already white-- life was draining out of him at terrifying speed.
"You fought well, Ako-chan," Phoenix heard Kleene say, as she attempted to staunch the flow of blood from his chest with her handkerchief. "You're a real hero."
"What a fool." The Queen said, her voice devoid of emotion. "I have lost my interest in human beings. I shall find us another planet."
Abs., who appeared a little too late, was incandescent with rage and not afraid to show it. "You bastard!"
"Abs.!" They heard Kleene cry. Phoenix and Abs. turned at once. "Akonyl isn't dead yet. His pulse is weak, but I think there's a chance he can be saved if we could just get him to a hospital!"
Abs. broke into a smile but the bee soldiers flew in front of him, blocking his way. "Leave now, without the vanquished."
Kleene was trying hard to contain her anger. "Your generals has nearly butchered Ako-chan. Are you really so twisted that you'd see him die on your hive rather than have us carry him to a hospital and let him take his chances?!"
"He fought and lost. He should be grateful that death is coming to wash clean his failure."
Phoenix intervened. "Please. You've made your point. I don't reckon he's long for this life anyhow. At least let us take him and give him..." She gulped. "...a proper farewell."
The Queen didn't flinch. "Alright. Take the fallen man if you wish. Just get off our hive. I'm weary of all of you miscreant creatures." She turned and flew away.
Phoenix stepped forward to join Kleene and Abs. at Akonyl's side. Abs. put a hand on Kleene's shoulder and leaned closer to look down at his fallen friend. Akonyl's face was as pale as snow and, in spite of Kleene's efforts, he was losing too much blood for his pain to last much longer.
"You did a fine job, Ako-chan," Kleene said. "A fine job, do you hear? We'll light fireworks in your honor. And each of us in the harem will toast to your greatness." There were tears in Kleene's eyes as she forced out the words. " And whenever we have a chance, we'll speak of Akonyl as the very stuff that legends are made of. You hear me?"
"That... would... be... cool..." Akonyl managed to rasp. Then he looked up at Abs. and Phoenix and a faint smile flickered across his violet lips.
"Time for this stripes to say goodbye."
He closed his eyes. His head rolled to the side.
"He's gone," Abs. said, placing a hand in Kleene's shoulder. Phoenix turned away in disbelief.
There was no sign of the Queen, but one of the bee generals flew forward. "He fought well," he said, surprisingly softly. "He carries no shame." He nodded briefly, then withdrew.
"Let me help you carry him," Abs. said to Kleene.
"Thanks," Kleene said, biting back her tears. "Come on, Ako-chan, shift a leg. Time to get you back home again, dear."
