Mystery Novels

I think I recall an old topic like this, but since it's quite forgotten I think I'll make a new one.

So we have the classics mystery writters like Agatha Christie, Ellery Queen, Rex Stout, John Dickson Carr, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, et etc...

I was wondering if anyone know any more current mystery novels?  I actually don't know any good mystery novel writers who writes in English nowadays.  I tried looking for some in the library's mystery section but they all feel more "action/romance/thriller" then "mystery" most of the time.  It's very annoying  .  I end up disliking the characters so much that I keep wishing they would just die in a blender.  Don't mind me ^^.

Currently I'm reading "The Big Sleep" by Raymond Chandler.  It's so confusing <3.  But like I said before I'm hoping for some more "modern" mystery novels, it'll be distressing to know that the genre is dying out D:.

I'm a big Sherlock Holmes fan, so those are the only real mystery books I have ever read in my life ( well I have read Goosebumps when I was a lilttle child, but I don't count that as a mystery novel ). I have always wanted to read some Ellery queen or Poirot, any recommendations?

Hmm... I don't know about current mystery novels... I'm currently reading something by Agatha Christie (I don't know the books' names in English, but the other was about a murder-play somewhere and then a real murder happens... I think it was a Marple, and I don't remember anything about the other.)  

Bright_zero, Mystery of the Orient Express (I think it's called that in English) is a good Poirot, at least in my opinion. I can't remember any other names now, butI'll definitely post if I remember more!

And at least here in Finland there are many more current mystery writers, like Reijo Mäki and Ilkka Remes, but I don't think their works have been translated to English... And I haven't read any books by them, so I have no idea what they're like, but one of my friends likes them.

Mmm, Goood Ol' Agatha Chrisite novels always do it for me.  Along with Sherlock Holmes as he was the first mystery story I had ever read, which really got me stuck on reading mysteries.  For me, I have a camp on the coast, and over the years (before I was even born) family members were big into mysteries and bought the enormous amount of books from the Detective Book Club (DBC) so when I go down there, I just grab one at random, and read on.  Each book has 3 stories to it, some Agatha Christie, Erle Staley Gardner, Ellery Queen, etc etc.  That pretty much does it for me.   

But yea, Like you said kirite, its so hard to find good new aged mysteries novels without something else tied in with it.

I think sue grafton (I might have messed that up). I haven't read any of the books yet but I now they go like, H for homicide for example.

I enjoy 'mystery' on pbs and if I remember right there was a series by P.D. James
Does any one know who invented Inspector Morse?

  Anyone ever read the Hardy Boys's series?  I used to read that as a kid all the time lol. Now that I think about it thats most likely what first got me into mystery books in general.  I had completly forgot about those books till now, fond memories  .

Btown:  Tell me about it, I even asked the librarians about good mystery books and all the ones they recommended didn't have any actual "mystery" in them =_=.  Like I said before it was more like romance/action/thriller with unlikable characters  .

Tantei Okuoku:  Yup Sue Grafton is right, A for Alibi, B for Burglar, C for Copse etc...  I think I like her, but I need to read more of her books to be sure ^^.

sstimson:  Inspector Morse is by Dexter (not sure full name) Coline Dexter or something like that xD.  I don't know about P.D. James, I'm definately check that out next time I go to the library.  Thanks so much!

Penguinfan:  Hardy boy's series?  I've read some of the more current ones, but from the way you mentioned it I take it there are many older cases as well.  I'll definately look those up, sounds fun~

I think they have re-printed most of them if not all of them.  My Dad passed down his collection to me.  He had every book from the early printings. They are in my closet somewhere lol.

hardy boys.  fun old kids books.  i think they might have turned into kids graphic novels.  the nancy drew books did. 

unfortunately i don't know any "modern" mystery novels.  which is too bad, since i do have trouble reading & watching other time stories.

a modern mystery try kindaichi, tantei gakuen q/ detective academy q, wait those are manga. the only "modern mysteries" I can think of are daxter and true blood.

Haha, yea..  I like writing a lot, if I write up a mystery here some time, I'll send it your way.  It probably won't be anything professional and amazing, but it'll be new!   probably pretty cheesy at that too. XD haha
