it's "random" because it is random, to a point. The GM will use a randomizer to give everyone roles, however if there isn't a balance of roles (like, too many BO, no protectors, etc) the GM may randomly reassign some of those people to different roles to make the game more balanced.

Also, remember that you may have more than 2 and a half hours to wait till you find out who you are, only people active in the prep phase get to know who they are at that point, everyone else waits another day.

So, are there townspeople with no abilities?
Like.. no character role.. just a normal person?

We try to balance it And some roles are "better" than others. And some roles are good in combination with other roles too.

New people, you can go to your profile, choose "Account-related Settings," and uncheck the box that says "Show other users your online status." If you do this, nobody will be able to see when you're PMing people.

Because you won't know anyone else role. And you can't just ask. Risking talking to the opposite team.
So you need an investigator.

I can PM that person and tell them I'm an investigator and I know they are doctor/cop etc.. right?

as far as i know it don't work that way o.O since you could lie about being an investigator

@Tommy: you can tell anyone anything you want over PM, but there's no guarantee they'll believe you. The only thing you're not allowed to do is forward/send people screenshots of PMs from me (like your role PM). Look at the rules if you're not sure if something's allowed, or ask me.

I see. This makes the difficulty of the game increase.
Because trust is an issue.
Even if people lynched me in the morning.. and I said I was cop/investigator.
They might not believe me.. ):
