No Akai meaning? >:(
Akai Shuuichi: The “Akai” part of Akai’s name refers to Mobile Suit Gundam character Char Aznable’s nickname “Red comet.” “Shuuichi” is a reference to the voice actor of Char Aznable, Ikeda Shuuichi (who incidentally became Akai’s voice actor too). “Okiya Subaru” is a pun on Char Aznable’s real name which is キャスバル “Kiyasubaru” (romanized as 'Casval' ) In case you are wondering why Gosho would name Akai after another manga/anime character, Char Aznable is as well known in Japan as Darth Vader is in the US.
Also are you sure that Mouri is derived from Maurice? I think there is an argument to be made for
Moriarty being the source. I suppose the name could be a reference to both.
Also the mermaid case guestbook thing has been proven to be entirely speculation and not a certain fact.
There is a thread about this topic already. Gin's codename is probably a reference to his silver hair color a la movie five. "Gin" pronounced with a hard G means silver. When romanized, it is spelled "Gin", the same spelling as the alcoholic beverage. Gosho always intended for Gin to have silver hair -- the animators botched it by making him blond.
Officers Yokomizo Juugo and Yokomizo Sango probably took their family name from Showa period Japenese mystery author Seishi Yokomizo. If the pun in movie thirteen in right, then their first names are a reference to 3*5 = 15.
I wonder if Yamamura Misao is a reference to Fujimura Misao? Yama means mountain and Fuji is Mount Fuji so the names have similar meanings, but Fujimura Misao doesn't have a connection to mysteries.
Most of the characters from Magic Kaito have color related names. Aoko is blue aoi, Akako is red akai, Nakamori Ginzo is silver gin, Hakuba's name has the character for white (白) in it...
The family name Kuroba is a pun on the japanese pronunciation of "clover". That's why Kaito Kid has a little clover doodad hanging from his monocle.
