I think I'm one of the few people who absolutely abhors Spider (both the character and the plot surrounding him), unfortunately.
Well I'm sorry you couldn't appreciate it, because I thought it was one of the rare times anything AO was allowed to be creative and fun, barring some early stuff. Mainly his first appearance, which was everything I love about anime practically.
Nothing came out of Spider, though. He was a glorified filler character that didn't really amount to anything. Sure, he served as a threatening foe to Kid, but he (and his "powers") always seemed nonsensical to me.
I used to hate Spider, because he wasn't needed and messed with things. Then I started to actually like his character. (Personality and actions, not his role, per se.) And the only reason he didn't amount to anything is because they never finished whatever they had going with him in the specials. In a world with Akako and magic, and where the main plot point is trying to find a jewel that glows under the moon and may grant immortality, someone with powers like Spider's aren't really nonsensical. And I like him because he's threatening, mostly because Snake never has made the best impression, getting tricked and made a fool of far more often, and he normally relies on a group of guys with guns.
...I'll admit, I'm incredibly biased in favour of Spider now, though, since I've almost adopted the character because I roleplay him on Tumblr, but still...
I actually really liked the addition of Spider too... He's an actual threat to Kaito. He practices a very similar art (he's a mentalist, I think), but he's perverted it to become an assassin. It contrasts with Kaito's magic, which is focused on entertaining people. Most of all - he's not stupid.
But, the way he was brought into a lot of episodes made no sense[/]. He'd often show up in a place where he couldn't have known Kaito would end up, and his wires, which would take a lot of preparation to make usable and safe, would be there too, or the writers would just forget about them and have Spider float off without them (like in the Crystal Mother heist). It was just really sloppily done, which is a pity, because the character concept is really cool.
My DC Fanfic: Awaking and Arising - Shiromi writes her version of the end of the series. With 100% more lesbians and immortal zombie boys. And existential crises. Lots of them. Kogorou - A character study that seeks to answer the question: Why is Kogorou the way he is? A Kindred Spirit - Sonoko and Makoto realize that they have more in common than previously realized. DC Fanfic Rants
Yeah his appearance in the Crystal Mother case was...pretty lackluster. It's really a shame that (it seems so far like) both of these adaptations are stuck right where the series was even before Conan started. I understand they don't want to make their own conclusion, but they both deserve a climactic ending of some sort I feel. They introduced Spider but...I don't think we ever figured out why Hakuba was interested in him.
Honestly also kind of a shame Magic Kaito in general has been sidetracked by Conan. I would be happy at Conan taking an extended break if it meant Gosho could bring even 1/2 of his ideas into the quicker and more goofy world of Magic Kaito.
Episode 21 was really good (it's also my favorite Kid heist from DC). All in all, this was the best DC case adaptation in this anime.
Also liked that Haibara made an appearance.
Three more episodes to go. Next week, Snake will get some action again, and then...!

Agreed, 100% I don't usually think much of the Conan challenge episodes, but this was a really good one.
As skye mentioned, I wish TMS could take A-1's colour palettes for Conan (they can keep their art though). The less flashy colours are much nicer to look at.
"I wonder if there really is a God...
If such an entity really existed, wouldn't all honest, hard-working people be happy?"
@irishock: no, we know from the completed anime schedule that it'll end with the newest MK manga chapters "Midnight Crow", which will be 2 episodes. Next week is Red Tear and the 2 weeks after that will be "Midnight Crow".
MK's latest episode didn't make it to the top 10 anime list this time (first time it happened). From what I understood, it's probably because there was some grand sumo match thing at the same time, and it might happen again next week.
They did a pretty good job with the Corbeau files, and I like the additional scenes they added. Especially the ones before the ending song, with all the characters appearing together. Those scenes really helped to give the series a sense of an ending, so kudos to A-1 for those extra touches and letting the characters get one last shine. Also that scene at the bar was pretty funny.
I like how in the original files Gosho brought pretty much all the characters for this heist, and I think the anime managed to make the it even better with their added touches.
I do like Kaito Corbeau, but I also hope it's not really Toichi and he's dead. I just don't think we need another fake death scenario, not to mention that it kinda undermines the narrative of the entire series. Hopefully, if Gosho ever continues this plotline, he'll surprise us by having Toichi stay dead and not bring him back.
Overall, I enjoyed this anime, despite some of its occasional hiccups. All the performances were pretty strong (besides Hakuba's first episode), it gave us adaptations to chapters that haven't been adapted yet, and the anime succeeded in keeping its tone intact, even though the manga's tone got a serious shift along the way. I also think this was a much stronger and more memorable adaptation than the special MK episodes we got from TMS. So I definitely hope we'll get a second season eventually, with redoing some more DC Kid cases, or maybe Gosho will do some more MK chapters so the anime gets more material.
I think my biggest complaint is that they skipped Akako's Delivery Service, and I do think redoing the first DC Kid case would have helped too (but they can always go back to that via flashback in a second season).
I haven't seen the finale yet but I strongly disagree on this as an adaptation. As an adaptation, I have fairly little to say nice about it that isn't just the successes of the original stories. And what I do have to say is mostly based on how weak the budget is for individual Conan episodes by comparison.
I mean, the Specials weren't all masterpieces either but I just felt they were way more fun to watch and were just way more exciting. That being said, less than half of the episodes being new material to animate probably didn't help in that regard.
After two weeks of not reaching the top 10 rated anime programs of the week (due to a grand sumo event that happened at the same time slot), MK's final episode got back to the top 10 with 6.1% (6th on the list).
