I somehow managed to hit every red light in the city of Edinburgh on my way to meet up with my best friend. I ended up being half an hour late >_>

My mom has been teaching for twenty years and is afraid she's not going to be able to renew her teaching license because--get this--the work she did as the CHAIRPERSON of the PUBLIC SCHOOL ACCREDITATION APPROVAL COMMITTEE for her school, which included gathering all the data for approval and evaluating other schools for accreditation under the public school system, for FIFTEEN YEARS, is NOT GOING TO COUNT toward her "professional development hours." And they just decided that like two years ago. Nor can she use the dozens of inservice presentations she's given or the time she spent working with student teachers because they happened during the school day.

Add to that the fact that her own school is giving her, the teacher who has stayed loyal to them for twenty years, and gotten more awards and gotten English test scores higher than they've ever been at that school, a pay cut and taking away her retirement benefits this year. She's 55. What is she supposed to do with that?

She wanted to leave that school next year because of that and go somewhere else that pays enough for her to live on, and got a job offer that she liked, but she can't take it unless she gets her license renewed. And if she does stay where she is, she won't be making enough money now and has no retirement benefits. It's like everyone in the world is telling her that her life's work doesn't matter.

I don't feel like this very often, but I think it would feel good to go down to the city education department that's been having her do their work for them and then telling her it doesn't count for anything, and to the school board of that nest of rich bastards where she's worked for twenty years, who don't have to worry about retirement plans because they own half the damn county, and hurt people until they're sitting in their dark house crying, too.

Teachers in the UK are being threatened with having their retirement slashed just now, as well. It's an absolute sin to do this to teachers, who are, on a daily basis, spending patient hours with the little b*stards that are kids, doing an almost thankless job that is nevertheless one of the most important in modern society. Teachers exert more influence over the next generation than anyone but their parents, generally. Teachers shape the future in how they educate the children under their care.

And yet governments in every developed country constantly cut their pay, as if it's an unimportant job full of easily replaceable drones. You just have to look at what happened when Winnie went to build a school in Rwanda to see what impact education has on a community.

I really hope somebody acknowledges the value of your mum's job and gives her a decently-paid job, pofa. She deserves it for what she does.

*sigh* Education really is such a privilege that so many people take for advantage. Not only do many students not realize the benefits of learning, from everything that seems to be going on, teachers aren't being recognized as privileges either.

Thanks, guys. :P I've calmed down about it.

I agree that teachers get treated poorly in this country, but right then I was angrier about the personal insult and callousness toward my mom than about the state of teachers in general. Partially because the pay and money from retirement benefits that were taken away from her at her school are going to pay raises for the younger, newer teachers.

RM: *hugs Kor* It happens. :(

Spoiler: railkills
Still haven't run over any big animals myself, just a flock of birds. But today I got to see some pretty bad ones lying by the rail. Or well three of those I've seem before as those moose have been lying there for some time. And it is not that I feel sad, or well I do feel sad, but not personal sadness, just general sadness that it is a waste of life. And those three moose have been lying there for a while now, I don't really like that. Besides from the fact that dead animals (and humans for that matter I suppose) are really creepy it feels wrong somehow. And further up north there really was a completely massacred moose, first the head and then the body some hundred metres after and then even more parts. But I suppose there is nothing more they can do to prevent it, they have fences up but that doesn't seem to help all the time. But that makes me wonder how bad it would be if there were no fences. Normally I don't feel this bad, perhaps it is the speed, we've been going really slow so you really get time to see everything even if you try not to.

Made plans with some friends that I haven't seen in a while to go out pubbing for St Pat's tonight. All of them canceled during the week and none of them bothered to tell me, who lives out of town and doesn't see them during the week >_>
