It's because the bubbling sound sounds like the sound the babies hear when they're in their mother's womb. Very effective, no?

I fail to see how something being old-fashioned would matter to a baby at all.

This should be obvious- figure out why it's crying! Check its nappy and change if necessary. Feed it if it's been too long since it's been fed. If it's not crying because it's hungry or uncomfortable, though, it might just be whining. In which case, you need to leave it to cry itself out.
