An Anime I must see......

Does anybody know any good animes that is not a dolly Henshin or prissy little girl show that has a female main character. The only one I have seen is Ghost in the Shell. But I'm so sick of looking at these ditsy girls that loved to get dolled up and talk about boys. All these girls are portrayed to be cute but none of them give a good reputation that women can have a strong mind and powerful.
Anybody know any? If you do please let me know cause I'll start seeing it right away.

The manga is awesome too. Actually I prefere the manga storyline ;_; *cry*.
The thing is Soragirl when mangas gets turned into anime, the female leads tead to get...generalised. It's like having your favorite book get turned into a over hyped movie, it usually does HORRIBLE THINGS to characterisation. Try reading manga- and avoid "Romance" if you don't like romance to begin with.
I think all main characters are shown as "weak" at the beginning. Tsuna (who is a guy) from REBORN for an extreme example. It's even more so in Japanese Animation because things are different there (not just to woman either).
Veritas, Black Lagoon (?), Chrno Crusade (THE MANGA), and lots others. I don't know what genre of anime you like to watch though o_o;

Ouran High, but Haruhi is shown as a boy and she's barely shown as a girl. Correct me if I'm wrong, 'cause I'm only up to chapter 4 in the manga.. o_O

If you're looking for a show with a strong female lead, then you NEED to watch Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit.

The lead is a female, she's really stong, and the show has excellent animation (some of the best!). It may be a little slow at times, but it's excellent.

Card Captor Sakura: yeah, it seems like it'd be cutesy, but Sakura is REALLY powerful!
Slayers! (How did this not get mentioned before?) Yeah, there's magic, but Lina is a POWERFUL sorceress with quite the temper! You don't want to mess with her! *^_^*
Maybe Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne (though that has henshin sequences).
Magic Knight Rayearth (no henshin sequences)
The Melencholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Nijumensou no Musume (translates to "The Daughter of Twenty Faces")
Earl and Fairy (this one's set in the UK around the turn of the last century or so, and if you can't stand historical it's no good)
Saiunkoku Monogotari -- the art style and setting (ancient Chinese-like country) is a little like Fuushigi Yuugi, but the story is...less flighty, perhaps a touch less bloody, and Shuurei is a LOT stronger than Miaka. Definately something good to watch if you're looking for girl-power. I can't tell much without giving away the storyline, but Shuurei wants to be an official, except she can't take the test 'cause she's female.
Telepathy Shoujou Ran -- the main males do almost nothing, everything is up to the two girls and they solve things quite well. All girl-power. *^_^* (I haven't actually gotten around to watching the whole series...)

shuurei is really strong, and although there's a bit of romance in it, it doesn't ruin the anime...

IT really doesn't matter what genre and I absolutely agree that animes do get messed up even when in the manga their characters are good. There are variety in male animes I have seen and they even have a male Henshin. Many Female animes are very one leveled for women. i guess because over there more males watch animes??? Oh, well. I'll be sure to check out the mangas. ^^

I
highly, highly recommend most any movie from Studio Ghibli. All of the below have great strong female protagonists:
Spirited Away (Won the Academy Award for best animated film!)
Kiki's Delivery Service
Whisper of the Heart (My personal favourite)
My Neighbor Totoro
Only Yesterday
Princess Mononoke
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
Howl's Moving Castle
