What's on your mind?

If you have some randomness to share that you can't post elsewhere, this is the place to do it.

Damn, I can't see it until it comes from TV here in Finland with subs... And I still haven't seen Eleventh's regeneration in the Christmas episode... Thankfully I have the season three to watch that comes every weekday.

My German accent never went away, so I spent 16 years in Israel speaking Hebrew without realizing I had an accent until someone pointed it out to me.
When I was in the US, no one could guess where I was from or what my accent was. Even though my accent is mostly German, it's not too extreme and more "down that road". Plus, many people in the US thought I was French because they said my "R" sounds French.

This Al guy must be pretty important. Because Al's Ice Bucket Challenge is everywhere nowadays.

I wish I thought of this joke before learning what ALS was, god dammit...

I would probably do better visiting places like Australia, England, and New Zealand, where English is at least somewhat official, but as far as the Internet is concerned, English is definitely common.
From my experiences in France, they're happier to help you if you start out in French, and once you can't go on, ask them if they speak English... in French xD In Paris the answer was almost alway yes.

If you come demanding things of them in English, well, anyone would be bitter if someone wandered up to them and started speaking to you in a language different from the country's native one, fully expecting you to just go with it, then getting huffy when you don't =V (I'm sure most everyone here knows that, I just wanted to point it out xD )
I see, that is the same situation with Spanish speakers coming to where I live demanding to have us respond in their language, so I do understand that aspect. Still, not too sure how well I would do there with two phrases for hello (one of which I learned from a book featuring the detective created by the author who wrote Phantom of the Opera), one good bye, and one for yes. That is about as far as my knowledge of French goes. Probably should see about a phrase for asking if they speak English.

Update: Does not seem that different than asking if they speak French, but it does sound weirder, at least if the online translation is correct.

The worst song in the universe right now is that pseudo-rock song for that Chromebook commercial.

mangaluva wrote:@Shiromi: you sound very American.
Yup, I'm an American. I speak the North-Western dialect of American English (I've lived in Montana most of my life. Contrary to popular opinion, Montanans don't sound like Texans. We sound like we're from Washington state), which is very close to the standardized American English dialect used for newscasters on TV. That's why my voice sounds "clear" - it's more that I'm speaking a dialect that more people are familiar with than the quality of my voice.

There's only one big difference between my speech and the TV-news speech - my dialect has one less vowel. My dialect doesn't differentiate between "ah" and "aw", so words like "cot" vs "caught" sound the same when I say them.

And my trouble with R-rolling: I was born with a bound tongue, which means a flap of skin connected my tongue to the floor of my mouth all the way to the end. I couldn't lift or stick my tongue out at all, affecting my speech in several ways: my Ts, Ds, and Ns are articulated off the backs of my teeth, instead of off my alveolar ridge, and all of my Ls are velar (sometimes called a "dark" L, it's made in the back of your mouth and usually found in Ls at the ends of words in English) instead of off the alveolar ridge. I couldn't do the Alveolar tap at all - the sound that replaces a T or D between vowels, also the sound that is the Japanese R - so I used a post-dental D instead. The flap of skin wasn't cut until I was 14 - too late to learn how to roll an R with any ease. I've trained hard though, and I can now make the Alveolar tap! The Alveolar tap is actually really, really close to a rolled R, so I've been using studying Japanese to get closer to being able to roll Rs fluently. That and singing along to Norwegian folk-rock.

Sorry about the impromptu lecture on phonetics...

Other people should post stuff where we can here you speak, because comparing dialects is fun!
Wait, you've never been to a speech therapist? It could have helped you a lot sooner!

I don't really know where to record my voice, since it's probably going to be a one off thing...

I can do IPA (international phonetic alphabet) transcriptions of people's speech if you're curious. I have an IPA keyboard, so it's pretty easy for me.
