Could you help me understand how Eisuke's blood type changed?

I still don't get it. Can one really change his blood type?
Also is it possible for an AB (Rena) to have a blood type O sibling?

I'm really confused.  ???

I'm not confident with this because I'm not familiar with curing Leukemia in the first place...

From what i understood that time, Eisuke had leukemia and had spread to his blood or something, and they(the blood) needed to be destroyed... then because of the bone marrow transplant, which had to be from a sibling or family member... it replaced eisuke's blood with rena, or was it that rena's blood that destroyed and replaced his blood or something... ;D

Blood cells are created from stem cells located in the bone marrow.  When someone has a bone marrow transplant, their blood type will change to the blood type of the bone marrow donor.

While I barely understand the blood change myself (Prince Trom's explanation helped), I can tell you it is very possible for an AB to have and O sibling because of genetics.  However, that would mean that one parent would have to have the Ai alleles and one parent would have to have the Bi allele (the i stands for the recessive allele that creates the O blood type).  I made a punnet square because I was bored so you could see what I mean, but I accidentally put o instead of i.  I'm only remembering a vague pic in my science book...

However, I'm not sure if I made it entirely correctly, but this way would make sense.

It's exactly like that, O is the recessive gene, and both A and B are dominant, so if you mix A with B you get AB, and the only way to get 0 is from two 0, because if you mix A/B with 0 you get A/B.

I remember it because it's the only thing I liked of Biology :P

tat sound like algebra than biology lol

well i hav no idea what these genetics thing work, all i know is blood transfusions lol

Maybe that's the reason I liked that stuff :P

Trom's explanation is just simple. If the stem cells (usually faulty in leukemia cases in the sense that it produces more white blood cells) in the bone marrow is changed into a different type (thru bone marrow transplant), the blood type will follow. Whatever Eisuke's past blood type is will have nothing to do w/his new blood type; no incompatibilities whatsoever, just painful aftereffects :P

And... to Q#2: answer is, yeah. From parents w/blood type AO and BO (O = recessive, just like how Posse said it), you get 25% each for AB, AO, BO, and OO (O). It's in DarkWolf's diagram. In short, Rena can have a blood type AB, A, B, or an O sibling.

The bone marrow is the one responsible for the production of new blood cell. Bone marrow transplants are performed for leukemia patients. If a person receives a bone marrow from someone who has a different blood type than that of the patient's, the patient's blood type will eventually convert to the donor's type...or something like that. ;D

Wow after a whole week there is STILL not a complete answer.  ::)

On the I've gave a detailed explanation about genotypes and phenotypes about a month ago on this very subject.

As for the Eisuke's blood type changing, here is an article on bone marrow transplants.

Basically, in an ideal case a donor with a matching blood type would be used, however in cases where a immune reaction would occur, the immune system of the recipient would be suppressed and all traces of the recipient's anti-A and/or anti-B lymphocytes would be destroyed by high doses of chemotherapy.

Essentially, the immunosuppression only allows the recipient to accomodate for new antigens, so the recipient's blood type does not always change after transplant. For example, a recipient with O type blood receiving AB bone marrow transplant would have his/her blood type changed to AB (like Eisuke and Rena's case). However if a recipient with AB type blood receives a bone marrow transplant from a donor with O, A, or B type blood, his/her blood would remain type AB, unless the majority of the bone marrow of the recipient is destroyed.

Note that bone marrow transplants do NOT alter the genotype of the recipient. In the case of Eisuke, he is still biologically OO genotype, which means the chromosome 9 he passes to his children still codes for type O blood. If he hooks up with Ran (who has the same blood type as Shinichi whom we've established in another thread CANNOT have blood type AB) their children would have some probability of having type O blood.

lol i don't like the last part :P

i can understand most of what u sed lol

when do schools start to teach you about this genotypes and phenotypes stuff? at college? uni? preschool? :P

Well, my biology class in 10th grade touched upon it, but AP is where we've gone very in depth with it, and AP is considered college work.  Genotype is basically the genetic make-up of an organism.

I'm guessing what Quiet Lurker was trying to say is, the DNA of the person doesn't change even if the blood type does during a bone marrow transplant, so the child of the person would still only be able to have either O, A, or B but not AB because the person's DNA still only has the code for O and even if an AB were to have children with an O whose blood type changed to AB there'd be no chance of the child having AB.

It still seems confusing, even trying to reword it though...

I'm still a bit confused. But thank you so much for answering my little non-sense question.  :)

This might be unrelated, but how will the Rhesus factor of the parents' blood affect the Rh factor of their children's blood? Somehow we weren't able to touch this :P

in the story it was said to be that Eisuke cured in his Leukemia through bone marrow transplant.. im thinking that it would be possible to transplant and AB type bone marrow from O type?? would it have a conflict??
