I think it's kind of underwhelming after 6+ years of buildup for Bourbon to just be yet another undercover agent. Can't Gosho just give us a bad guy once in awhile? The Organization is starting to feel like one of the leakiest ships out there.

Also, we talked about it in the spoiler cbox, the revelation that a section of the police is aware of the BO brings back Takagi Chosuke into mind, and the possibility that the crime syndicate he referred to was really the BO.

Here's what I'm thinking about Chapter 897...

I can quite understand that people are upset about Bourbon turning good. That's something a lot of people didn't want to happen, and many of those probably considered their hopes realised after Chapter 892. Amuro's response It seems you misunderstood. after Conan implied he figured out Bourbon is one of the good guys seemed pretty clear. I guess many considered it confirmed that Bourbon is an actual BO member and not undercover. I know I did. It seems very unlike Gosho to then turn around and say, Well, Bourbon just lied. Fooled you - neener neener.

Bourbon will still have his moments, though. For me, he's still the same character that I've liked, but not so much so as to say he's my favourite character in the series.


I do take issue with the chapter, though. All this time we've thought Bourbon is showing Conan up. He's figuring out that Akai's death was faked and how they did it. He's getting closer to Akai and Conan seemed powerless to do anything about it. Also, Bourbon outright says he's not Japanese intelligence. Conan seemed vulnerable and for the first time was wrong about something this major, or so it looked like.

And then Gosho starts revealing things. Turns out faking Akai's death, Conan's plan... what happened in 897, Conan's plan as well... The theory Bourbon is actually a good guy with PSIA, Conan was right all along... I don't think I was the only one enjoying to see Conan be wrong for once. It even looked like he called his dad in because Bourbon was just too smart. But then Gosho turns around and says, No, Conan is always right - neener neener.

Then there's the plan. Are we to believe that Bourbon hoped Akai would give himself up to save Jodie and Camel? That doesn't sound like a plan worthy of him. Bourbon must have known that Conan and Akai were expecting a move...

Then there's the whole Macademy Awards. That just seemed completely unnecessary. It didn't have to be Yuusaku who is disguised there. Anyone could've potentially done that. After all, Conan was gonna talk for Okiya there. I can see that they wouldn't want to put Yukiko in that kind of danger, sort of anyway, but to have a disguise fest with Yuusaku as Okiya while usually it's Akai, Yukiko as Yuusaku at the awards seems like overdoing it. I guess Gosho tried to show Yuusaku on television and Akai in the car, so as to make it look like neither of them could be Okiya this time, but still...

And, yeah, I guess I do find myself in agreement with the sentiment that far too many characters who look like they might present a threat to Conan at first turn out not to be. Vermouth, Kir, and now Bourbon... Seems the only truly evil character that remains in Gin...

It's a complete anti-climax. My hope is that either Bourbon is going to backstab Conan (looks rather unlikely) or that Yusaku gets targeted by BO for talking about Akai on international TV, which would make the Awards actually relevant.

Okay, actually forgot a couple things.

The peacemaking. Bourbon wants to give up Akai to make a name for himself, which would in turn also kill Kir. I believe he's aware of that. For some reason, we don't entirely know what it is, Bourbon hates the FBI along with Akai. That was hinted at during the Checkmark case. Now, one phone call and Bourbon backs off. Conan actually calls him Liar while his facial expression seems to suggest he's almost joking... How are they best friends all of the sudden?

Amuro's responce "That's rich, coming from you." How is that rich? Amuro did outright deny working for PSIA. What did Conan ever lie to Bourbon about other than being a six-year-old...

And then there's Akai suddenly showing up in the car. How did Jodie and Camel not realise he's there?

Amuro is aware Conan is using Kogoro to solve cases, so he likely refers to that.

Amuro believes Conan was the mastermind behind the plan to fake the death of Akai, which required Conan to lie to Jodie specifically and generally perpetuate deception on a big scale.

Oh, right, there's that, too... so faking Akai's death and being the real Nemuri no Kogorou.

Although I mostly share everyone's "disappointment" towards Amuro being yet another undercover agent, I wanna note there's still room for something interesting to follow file 897. Even if he is a good guy, Amuro did explain to Vermouth his suspicions about Akai's fake death. Although Vermouth isn't the most "loyal" BO member there is, I think there's a big chance she's going to report that to Gin/The Boss. Why? Well, because it isn't a difficult leap from Akai=alive to Kir=liar/traitor. And Vermouth did already suspect Kir (remember the knock knock thing) so, even if she's a danger to the BO herself, I get the feeling she doesn't tolerate any external threats, so to speak (excluding her favourite silver bullet, of course). She probably doesn't even know about Bourbons true allegiance either, but we can (safely?) assume Amuro knows about Kir's. So, if I were Gosho, the next logical step for me would be to have Vermouth inform on Kir and see which cards do Conan&co hide under their sleeve. If they don't take Kir into consideration after this, I gotta side with Jd and just GRRRRRR!!
I have to admit, though, that even if they do mention her in the next(s) files, and Conan has a plan, it just feels too sudden a move to have Kir's cover blown to pieces after such a deftly resolution in red vs black.

But after all this was just the prologue. Let's see how it continuous with file 900.
