When to watch each of the movies/OVA's

Post by shineek »

As the title says , can someone tell me after what episode watch which movie ? From other anime series i know that even if they are not connected to much with the series , the movies may spoiler some good stuff . Ive watched Bleach Movie 4 before i got to the episodes where the openings had the movie previews in them , and the movie had some spoilers for some stuff . I want to avoid such things with this anime so i need some list that would say at what point to watch a movie or OVA .

Up to 425 for movie 13 although some of the newer inspectors appear later on for the later movies I think...

Where are you in the series? The easiest way to know when to watch the movies is to take a hike over to DCW's wiki, look up the Japanese airdates of the movies (all in april btw), and then watch all the episodes aired before the movie (listed on the main anime page), and then watch the movie. Then go back to watching episodes.

Also this is the spoiler board which contains some really unfortunate spoilers because we stay up to date with the manga, so be careful. That said, if you tell people where you are in the series, we would be happy to tell you all the no-spoiler info you want.

Word of warning: DCW wiki is anime safe in the anime pages, but DOES NOT hide spoilers in the character/organization articles.
Another word of warning: keep the heck away from any topic discussing the upcoming movie 18 if you have not gotten to the Mystery Train. (Episode 704)

Im not reading any topics in this part of the forum , and im close to 123 , thats why i asked also which subber should i pick next . At this point i think i can watch a movie or two , but im not sure if any OVA's should be watched at this point . Also from experiance the movie release date times are not really a good way to tell which movie to watch , especially , cause they are released a lot later than the episodes they somewhat might refer .

Example in Detective Conan would be the first movie that i already watched , its release date fits the second season , but the story seems to be placed earlier , near the end of season 1 .

It's like this, for example this year there's going to be a movie coming out that you have to watch all the episodes for... But you have to watch the movies 12-17 for the Magic File OVAs... From Magic File 2 onwards I think. So... watch episodes for M12 then watch Movie 12 then Magic File 2, M13, MF3, M14, MF4 etc.

Episode to reach (and watch) - Movie(s) that can be watched :
1 - Movie 1
32 - Movie 2
129 - Movie 3
146-147 - Movies 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 15, 17
284-285 - Movies 10, 11, 12, 16
356 - Movie 14
425 - Movie 13
704 - Movie 18

I think that covers it, even regarding the minor characters.

I would make some adjustments to that list because there are some context clues and plot developments that you would want to pick up, or else you will find out about certain things too early.

I think I have it sorted out now. If you spot any problems, please tell me.

This list is the earliest you can watch the movies and OVAs, not necessarily the best time to watch the movies and OVAs. The BEST time list is in the post below.

6 - Movie 1 (Sonoko intro - or if you prefer her manga-based debut Episode 35)
32 - Movie 2 (Eri intro)
75 - Magic Kaito Special episodes 1-12 (You want to get the backstory before 76, but note Conan's cameos make no sense in these episodes because the timeline does not match up)
76 - OVA 1, OVA 4(skip OVA 4 if MK special 11 watched) (Kid intro)
129/131 - Movie 3 (Ai intro. I would personally choose to wait until post 131 [Indiscriminate soccer stadium threatening case] to get some more character development)
147 - OVA 2 (direct reference to 147), Movie 4, Movie 6, OVA 12 (Sato Takagi Yumi Shiratori Chiba)
178 - Movie 5 (Because the showdown on the snowy roof includes some character interaction relevant to certain characters in this film.)
285 - Movie 10, OVA 6 (Jugo)
311 - Movie 7, OVA 3 (Ref to movie 7), Movie 8, OVA 5, Movie 9, OVA 7, Movie 11, Magic File 2, Movie 12, OVA 10, Movie 15, Magic File 6, Movie 16 (Belt gadget intro)
356 - Movie 14, Magic File 4 (Jirokichi)
361 - OVA 8 (Shinichi's classmates), OVA 9 (Araide)
517 - Movie 13, Magic File 3 (Kansuke intro)
552 - Movie 15, Magic File 5 (MF5 contains elder Kojima so needs to be post episode 552)
621 - OVA 11 (London)
694 - Movie 17
704 - Movie 18 (Mystery Train)

For the OVAs and Magic Files
(There is no Magic File 1)
Before Movie 12 - Magic File 2 Shinichi Kudo, The Case of the Mysterious Wall and the Black Lab
AFTER Movie 13 - Magic File 3 Shinichi and Ran, Memories of Mahjong Tiles and Tanabata
AFTER Movie 14 - Magic File 4 The Osaka Okonomiyaki Odyssey
AFTER Movie 15 - Magic File 5 Niigata~Tokyo Souvenir Capriccio
Before Movie 16 - Magic File 6: Flower of Fantasista

76 - OVA 1. (It might help to have also watched up until Episode 4: A Witch Sheds No Tears of Magic Kaito Special to understand the Kaitou Kid backstory. being familiar with the plot of Yaiba - an earlier manga of Gosho's would also help.)
147 - OVA 2 (direct reference to 147)
After Movie 7 - OVA 3
76 - OVA 4 (Skip if you have seen Magic Kaito Special Episode 11 because it is a duplicate)
311 - OVA 5
After Movie 10 - OVA 6
311 - OVA 7 (with movie 11)
361 - OVA 8 (Shinichi's classmates)
361 - OVA 9 (Araide)
311 - OVA 10
621 - OVA 11
147 - OVA 12 (Takagi Chiba)

Re: When to watch each of the movies/OVA's

Double posting because the above list I made is the earliest rather than the best time you can watch episodes. Here is a list of which episodes I would watch just before the movie/ova/magic file based on the plot content.

Episode 40 - Movie 1
Episode 75 - Magic Kaito Special episodes 1-6 (You want to get the backstory before 76, but note Conan's cameos make no sense in these episodes because the timeline does not match up)
Episode 76 - OVA 1
Episode 96 - Movie 2
Episode 134 - Movie 3
Episode 147 - OVA 2
Episode 162 - Movie 4
Episode 213 - Movie 5
Episode 218 - Magic Kaito Special episodes 7-12
Never - Movie 6 (But seriously there is no good place to fit this one...)
Episode 293 - Movie 7, OVA 3
Episode 334 - OVA 5, Movie 9
Episode 356 - Movie 8
Sometime when you are up for something wacky - OVA 8
Episode 383 - OVA 12
Episode 387 - Magic File 2, Movie 12
Episode 408 - Movie 10, OVA 6
Episode 412 - Movie 11, OVA 7
Episode 428 - OVA 9
Episode 517 - Magic File 3, Movie 13
Episode 538 - Movie 14, Magic File 4
Episode 581 - Movie 15, Magic File 5
Episode 587 - OVA 10
Episode 621 - OVA 11
Episode 694 - Movie 17
Episode 735 - Movie 18
Episode 741 - Magic File 6, Movie 16
Episode 774 - Movie 19

Note that OVA 4 is missing. It is a duplicate of Magic Kaito Special 11.
Edit: Fixed Movie 18, and Magic Kaito Specials.

Anyway to insert that into DCW somehow? Probably useful for newcomer to the series.

I never saw this episode because I don't watch the anime all that often so I miss most AOs. It does contain a reference to boarding the Aegis. I'll fix that right away.

My list is pretty subjective, although it would definitely be possible to note the few cases like the above where there does seem to be a known point in the anime where a movie happened.

Hey, if you haven't got up to episode 13 yet, I would recommend watching episode 128 instead of episode 13, since episode 128 is basically the version of episode 13 that does not totally mess up the series continuity. Actually, I edited episode 128 to feature the opening and ending themes from season 1 and to add in the part where Agasa gives Conan the tracker glasses. That scene is important since he obtains the tracker glasses in episode 13, (but not episode 128,) however, he actually uses the glasses in both versions. You can find my edit on the latest blog post of my website http://superjonathan.com

Just a heads up. I made the edit because I'm watching it from the beginning again too. Thanks, Chekhov, for your list, BTW, it helps, and luckily I'm not up to episode 40 yet so I still have time to follow your list. (I was originally planning on watching the movies & OVAs based on when they released in Japan, BTW, as well.)

EDIT: BTW, the only place it makes sense to place the scene where Conan gets the glasses is at the beginning, like it is in episode 13. However, for a few seconds you can see that the newspaper he's reading is about the 1 billion yen robbery, which in episode 128 doesn't happen until a little after the beginning, but I edited out those few seconds anyways, so...

Me. I haven't seen most of the AOs after episode 150 or so.

Lots of people only want to watch the manga based episodes in order to catch up. I don't blame them. DC is long. It took me about a year to get current in the manga alone.
