Also, if Conan kept calling Shinichi-niichan, he's running risk of making his being alive getting (even more? =p) widely known.

He is not arrogantly proud as Shinichi and Heiji are. He does not really care about solving (most) cases, and if Conan does the dirty work for him and he still gets all the fame - just the better.

I'm digging up an old topic but...
I think that Kogoro knows "on some level" just like Ran.
as for him being amazed few times that you use as rebuttal "this shows he doesn't know"
1.Bath&Blood type in desperate revival:
Bath:assumin he knows and is keeping it secret, he could be swallowing his pride to keep Conan's cover as he thinks Ran doesn't know
Blood type: He gets shocked to notice that Ran knows and hasn't done anything.
The time he goes "when did he become so..?" could be continued:
"...openy smart? He's blowing his own cover at this rate!"
I think that it's possible that he has been in contact with Yuusaku if he found out...and therefore knew the "Conan's mom" being Yukiko.
also why he has not said anything if he knows: He fears that Ran would kick his ass for not telling.
aaahhh...now I feel like I have said what was in my mind...
PLEASE find flaws from theory. I know there are some but I'm too dumb to notice them right of the bat...

responding to the old topic of whether Kogoro was a good policeman or not:
looks like Kogoro is type of person who was a born genious, and because of that lazy to show it (and thus, his talents become buried). He was the best member in his judo team, but because he was lazy he wasn't as famous as the other guy (the culprit in that case). Maybe that's also what happened in his police career, he just too lazy to show his true worth.
Kogoro is not a completely bad detective too, when he really serious (like the highschool case or actress case) he is reliable.
